Funeral services for Alice Modella Mae Strong Barber, 93, of Onalaska, Texas, will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Carlisle Baptist Church in the Carlisle Community, Texas, with Bro. Dwain Pollard officiating. Visitation will be held the same day from 10:30 till service begins in the Carlisle Baptist Church in the Carlisle Community, Texas. Interment will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
Mrs. Barber was born May 14, 1922 in Norman, Oklahoma to parents, Samuel Strong and Alice (France) Strong, and passed away January 21, 2016, in Huntsville, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry C. Barber Sr., sisters, Roberta Strong, Ora Nishimuta, and Yvonne Zayat.
Mrs. Barber was a registered dietitian having earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Master's degree from Columbia University. She proudly served her country in the United States Army including service in Europe in the Army Specialist Corps during World War II. For this service she was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Defense Ribbon. In total she served seventeen years and was honorably discharged after having attained the rank of Major.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law; David and Leslie Barber of Lake Jackson, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Della Barber of Onalaska, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Tommye Sue and Alton Carlson of Hemphill, Texas; grandchildren, Jane Ponder (Tom), Dottie Barber, Sheri Gregory (Roy), Matthew Barber, Sarah Barber, Ryan Barber, Alissa Barber, Anthony Bell, Laurin Cuellar (Josh); 3 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Helga Strong of San Diego, California; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Carlisle Baptist Church or charity of choice.
