Obituary

Memorial services for Alvin Edmond Hess, Jr., 89, of Livingston, Texas will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Pine Forest Baptist Church, 10537 US 190, Livingston, Texas with Pastor Shaun Ferry officiating.

The angels came for Alvin "Al" Edmond Hess, Jr. on June 17, 2018 at the age of 89. Born December 23, 1928 in Yarmouth, Maine his parents Alvin E. Hess, Sr., and Frances Drover Hess, introduced him to brothers Richard and Donnie.

During World War II, Al joined the Merchant Marines. When WWII was nearing an end he joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the destroyer, USS Winslow (AG127) until discharged in April 1949.

On leave in Waco Texas in December 1947 he met Betty Jane Carruth on Christmas night. Falling in love, he returned the following December and they married December 22, 1948.

Upon Alvin's discharge from the Navy in 1949 he worked as a dry cleaner for two years then returned to his hometown of Abington, Mass where he worked for several months before rejoining the Navy in June, 1951 where he served aboard the destroyer USS Robinson (DD562) until discharged in Sep 1955.

When he left his four years of service to the Nation he and Betty moved to Jacinto City, Texas where he immediately got a job at the old Sheffield Steel, which later became Armco Steel, working there for the next 28 years.

During their marriage they were blessed with six children, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Upon his retirement from Armco Alvin and Betty moved to Penwaugh Marina on beautiful Lake Livingston, Texas where they established their home.

Alvin loved his Savior, Jesus Christ. He served as Sunday School Class President at Hardin Baptist Church, Heights Baptist Church in Alvin and was usher and "Greeter" in both churches. After moving to Lake Livingston he enjoyed his fellowship with friends at Blanchard Baptist Church and was a member of the Pine Forest Baptist Church, Onalaska.

Alvin was predeceased by his parents Alvin Sr. and Frances, his brothers Richard and Donnie, and granddaughter Bonnie Christine Nicole Hess. He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Betty, daughter Donna J. Stark and husband Leon, sons David C. Hess and wife Linda, Lawrence Scott Hess and wife Pricilla, Rusten T. Hess and wife Nancy, Mitchell C. Hess, Donald Neal Hess and wife LaDonna, and sister-in-law Bobbie Hess (wife of brother Donnie). He is also survived by several nieces.
