Funeral services for Billy Joe Cardwell age 78 of Point Blank, Texas will be held Friday February 11, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Onalaska, Texas with Rev. Don Wilkey and Pastor Dan Ruggles of Wynnewood, Oklahoma officiating and interment to follow in the Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska. Pallbearers will be Jim Jones, Jim Wendling, Bill Mann, Fred Ivy, Bud Goza and Bud Hayes. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of the First Baptist Church and Jerry Hayes.
Billy was born May 18, 1932 in Wynnewood, Oklahoma the son of Floyd Nathan and Juanita Strickland Cardwell and went to his eternal home on February 5, 2011.
Billy came to know the Lord in Gonzales, LA., in 1960. His passion the rest of his life was to bring others to Christ. He was an ordained deacon in League City First Baptist Church; he served many churches in many capacities. He devoted his whole life to serving his Lord. He taught Sunday School and preached some for many years. He also taught a Covenant Marriage Class for young couples. Billy and Joan ministered in several volunteer programs such as chaplains and establishing churches in California. They were part of the Billy Graham Crusade in California ministering to the homeless. They also ministered to athletes at the Atlanta Georgia Olympics. Billy was a faithful member of the Onalaska First Baptist Church serving as deacon, Sunday School teacher and various committees.
He was a boilermaker in his first jobs, he started working for CB & I at the age of 19. He served his country as a CPL in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Haliburton upon returning from Korea then joined El Paso Natural Gas as a surveyor in the Four Corners area while living in Farmington, New Mexico. He retired from HMT, Inc, as manager of its Northwestern Division including Alaska.
Billy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan, son Bill of Sacramento, CA., daughter, Valerie Kevin Deaver and husband Danny of Baytown, Texas, brother, David Cardwell and wife Johanna of Norman, Oklahoma, Brandee Hake, grandsons Jesse Caleb Deaver, Billy Joel Deaver, Dustin Clay Deaver and great grandson Cash Deaver. Sunny Lynn Mayberrry of Sacramento, CA., and Karen Diller of Friendswood, Texas, cousins also survive.
