BR Haynes was born on October 2, 1926 in Livingston TX to Newman & Lillian (Peebles) Haynes and passed away on March 13, 2021 at the age of 94 in Livingston TX. Visitation will be held at Cochran Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 17 th . Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Livingston at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 18 th with burial to follow at Peebles Cemetery.
Growing up in Livingston, BR attended Livingston High School where he played football and graduated in the class of 1943. He briefly attended Texas A&M University but left to join the war effort in WWII. Colorblindness prevented him from joining the fighting forces, so he enlisted in the US Merchant Marines and served in the European theater delivering materiel to England, Italy, and Russia. After returning to Livingston, he worked as a golf pro at a private golf course. He then joined the family business (Haynes Manufacturing Co., now Little Beaver, Inc.) with his father. He worked as a salesman travelling the east and central US selling their products, which included a tractor mounted mower, brush saw, tree girdler and post hole digger. After his father's retirement he took the reins of the business, which he later passed on to his sons. After retirement in 1987 he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the western United States, enjoying the many National Parks and other scenic areas. He was named Polk Countian of the Year in 1972. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Livingston and served on the Miracle on Church Street building committee when the church was moved to its current location. He was a 32 nd degree Mason and lifetime member of Masonic Lodge 14 in Livingston. He has been a member of the board of directors of First State Bank of Livingston since 1981, serving as Director Emeritus since 1997.
He joined the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department in 1960 and was elected Chief in 1963. He served until his retirement in 1977 and will forever be known as Chief Haynes, Unit 3. Under his leadership the department was brought into the modern era, with new equipment and a new station. He served as president of the Texas State Fireman's and Fire Marshall's Association in 1970. One of his great joys later in life was attending their annual conventions as a Past President. His sons John & David, along with grandsons Ethan & Austin, have followed in his footsteps as firefighters and first responders.
BR was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Newman Haynes Jr.; infant son, Jerry Don Haynes; son, Jimmy Haynes; and daughter, Janice Haynes. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Fayelene (Kersh) Haynes; sons, Joe Haynes and wife Nancy, John Haynes and wife Londa, & David and wife Lisa, all of Livingston; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Haynes of Loveland, CO.
