Byron Delaney Hines, 86, was born May 12, 1933 in Livingston Texas and passed into the next life on Tuesday, September 17, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Ruby (Matlock) Hines and brother-in-law Jesse Sims. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Doris (Griffin) Hines, daughters Mary Hines Lee and her husband Ralls of Seabrook, Pamela Hines McLaurin and husband Chuck of Center Grove, Melinda Hines Graves and husband Ron of Floydada, Texas, grandchildren Kaleb McLaurin and wife Raynie, Makenzie Thomas and husband Cullen, Braden Graves and wife Sarah Jo, Heston Graves and fiancé Callie Crocket, Savannah and Sigourney Lee, great grandchild Reece Taylor McLaurin, and 2 other great grandchildren on the way. He is also survived by his sister Betty Sims and sister-in-law Mary Bridges, along with many other relatives and friends.
Byron grew up in Livingston, graduating from Livingston High School in 1951 and met his future wife, Doris, while riding the bus to Houston. He joined the United States Air Force, later working for the Federal Aviation Agency and ultimately NASA at Johnson Space Center in Houston. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree in 1972 from the University of Houston. He continued to work at NASA in various engineering and project management roles during the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs until retiring in 1988. In 1974, he and Doris owned and operated Hines Electronics/Radio Shack until after 2000. During his career the family lived in Santa Monica, California, League City, Texas and returned to Livingston in 1977. While in League City, they along with other families helped start Texas Avenue Baptist Church. Byron was a member of the Livingston Lions Club, American Legion, and Central Baptist Church. He and Doris loved to camp, fish, and traveled in their RV for many years to the National Gospel Quartet Convention. They loved Gospel music.
The family would like to thank Eric Wood and the staff of nurses and others at Pine Ridge Nursing Home for their love, care and support for Byron for the past few months.
A memorial service will held at Central Baptist Church in Livingston on Saturday, September 21 at 11:00.
