Clinton Burchfield died peacefully with his family by his side on December 24, 2015.
He was born on April 13, 1926 in Livingston, Texas to Mitchell and Velma Burchfield.
Clinton grew up and went to school in Livingston, and joined the Army in November of 1945. In the Army, he was a paratrooper and member of the 187 th Glider Infantry. After training, he was sent overseas and was part of the Army of Occupation (Japan). After 7 months in Japan and achieving the rank of Corporal, he returned to Texas and was discharged at Fort Sam Houston.
Soon after returning to Livingston, he went to barber school and met his wife, Alma Smith of Goodrich, Texas. In the fall of 1949 he headed south to find a place to start his barber business. In September of 1949 they settled in Bay City, Texas. Clinton cut hair in Bay City longer than anyone else-over 40 years. He lived in Bay City for close to 65 years.
Clinton was an avid fisherman and hunter. While cutting hair he often told his customers that he was the "Best Fisherman in the County". Following in his brother's, Talmadge and Jesse Coleman's footsteps, Clinton earned his private pilot's license while in Bay City. He owned and flew his own plane, a Piper Clipper. Throughout the 60's and early 70's he would often fly his wife and daughter to Livingston for visits with his family.
In 1984, his first grandson, Matthew was born followed by Michael in 1987. Clinton could now stop asking his daughter if he would have to "buy himself a grandchild". Matthew and Michael became the center of his life. He taught them how to hunt and fish almost as good as himself.
In 1994, Clinton was diagnosed with a heart condition that caused him to retire from the haircutting business. In 1995, Clinton lost his wife, Alma and he spent the next 20 years splitting his time between Bay City and Livingston with many visits to New York to see his grandchildren.
During his retirement, Clinton was lucky to have many special people in his life. Two of the most important, were Jessie Long and Kay Long Campbell. They provided friendship and support for over 20 years.
When Jessie Long died in November 2014, it was time to move back to Livingston. He resided at The Bradford at Brookside Nursing Home for the last year of his life. This put Clinton close to his sister, Sammie Burchfield Smith and her husband, Clyde. They were his angels for the last year of his life.
Preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Velma Burchfield. His wife, Alma, his brothers, Jim Hendry, Billy Brooks, Talmadge, Coleman and Truman Burchfield.
Survived by his daughter, Kay and husband Mark Rolle, his grandsons, Matthew and Michael Rolle and his sister Sammie and Husband, Clyde Smith.
Pallbearers: Matthew Rolle, Michael Rolle, Mark Rolle, Robert Long, Bryan Long, Charles Clark.
Honorary Pallbearers: Clyde Smith, Lawrence Kendrick, Jerry Campbell.
