Doris Elaine (Schaffer) Forehand, was born on August 20, 1941, at home, on a farm, in the township of Dalmatia, right outside of Berrysburg, Pennsylvania. She passed away on December 14, 2021, at 12:56 p.m. in Houston, Texas, surrounded by her son and daughter-in-law and daughter. After graduating from high school, Doris enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, and was stationed in Oceanside, California where she served for two years. While there she met and fell in love with a handsome Marine, Crpl. Forrest Forehand. They married on Good Friday, April 15, 1960. To this union was born a son, Donald Forehand, on August 28, 1961, in Oceanside, California. Toward the end of Forrest's tour of duty, and being pregnant with their second child, Doris moved to Texas. Their daughter, Barbara Forehand, was born on September 25, 1962, in Houston, Texas. They resided in Houston, until Forrest's retirement from the Houston Fire Dept. They then moved to Livingston, Texas where they remained and called home until their deaths. Doris and Forrest were happily married for 45 years until he passed away on July 29, 2005. She is preceded in death by her parents, George Schaffer and Frances (Witmer) Schaffer; husband, Forrest Forehand; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Karnes and Vernon Forehand; sister, Donna Freeseman; sisters-in-law, Lynne Schaffer and Barbara Lynn Forehand; and son-in-law, Quentin Purvis.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Ruth Forehand of Houston, Texas; daughter, Barbara Purvis of Livingston, Texas; grandchildren, Chelsea Vestal Villarreal and Michael of Livingston, Texas, Blake Vestal and Karlee of Livingston, Texas, Zachary Forehand and Emily of League City, Texas, and Lydia Forehand of Comanche, Texas; great-grandchildren, Michaela Villarreal, Carson Villarreal, Hayden Villarreal, Carter Villarreal, Bailee Vestal, Luke Vestal, James Vestal, Rachel Forehand, and Matthew Forehand; brother, Gary Schaffer of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; nephews and families, Dirk Freeseman of Fort Worth, Texas, Derrek Freeseman of Castle Pines, Colorado, and Michael Schaffer of California; niece and family, Jessica Rein of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; and special life-long friend, Lucille Meadors of Seabrook, Texas; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Doris was not only a Marine, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother, but most all she was a devoted Christian. Doris loved the Lord. She was a member of First Baptist Church here in Livingston. Doris didn't miss very many Sundays until her health and Covid prevented it. The past two years she deeply missed her Sunday school class, church services and church family. However, that didn't stop her. She believed in supporting her church. She tithed regularly, donated to mission trips, and gave wherever and whenever needed. If she wasn't filling hundreds of Easter eggs for the student ministry, she was baking cookies for Vacation Bible School. Doris loved children, with her greatest blessing being her 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She loved being "NaNa," and the children loved their NaNa! Constant lap time with NaNa was right up their alley, to rocking the little ones to sleep, pretending to eat playdoh hamburgers and pizzas, to putting puzzles together, to playing board games and cards. The children always knew where the M&Ms, moon pies, ice cream and sodas were. During her life time, there wasn't much Doris wasn't able to do or be good at: homemaker, cook, baker, cake decorator, seamstress, handmade quilt maker, and crafters. When Doris was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, she attended meeting, participated in fund raisers and often placed flags on military graves. Though Doris' health failed her and she struggled for the past several years, she never complained. Doris will be missed tremendously by her family and friends. God bless and Simper Fi Doris!
