Dorothy was born March 29, 1925 in Coleman, Texas to parents, Steve Andrew Yancy and Linnie Bea (Hicks) Yancy, and passed away September 16, 2019 in Livingston, Texas. She lived on a farm with her six siblings. She was the youngest and her dad always called her "Curly." When Dorothy left home, she moved to Houston and took a position at AT&T Telephone Company. It was there in Houston that she met Elvin "Al" Monthy through her brother, Steve and his wife, Esther - who luck would have it, was Al's sister. Al and Dorothy courted and were married on September 19, 1947. Together they had four children, Phillip Elvin, Larry Floyd, Marilyn, and Karen Kay. Dorothy was a devoted housewife and mother. While her children were growing up, she was a personal seamstress and tailor for many clients. She loved her career and was complimented by everyone she sewed for. After the children were grown, she worked for Sakowitz and the Woman's Shop at the Gulf Gate Mall. Al and Dorothy were active members of the Park Place Baptist Church and they raised their family in a loving Christian home.

Around 1975, Al's job moved them from Houston for Carrizo Springs, Texas. Even though they were far from their families, they made friends very easily. With Al away at work, Dorothy single-handedly transformed the dry, sandy, mosquite tree, cactus covered property where their trailer sat, into an oasis! She planted every bit of the St. Augustine grass, assorted flower bulbs, and blue bonnets that covered their lot. It was beautiful! The children loved to visit their Mom and Dad. They would always take any visitors to Piedras Negras, Mexico to shop and eat. When Al retired, Dorothy wanted to be close to their family again and they soon found a house with some acreage in Livingston. When they looked at the property, Dorothy said, "I can see us living here." So… Al bought it. Dorothy quickly turned it into a loving home, and of course over the years, she make it into a gardener's dream. She worked and planted every inch of those two acres. Both Dorothy and Al were very active in the Central Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school every Sunday. She was also a member of the Polk County Garden Club and she won countless awards for her beautiful arrangements.
