She is survived by her husband, Preston Young; son and daughter-in-law, Donald Young and Pam; daughter and son-in-law, Prescilla Updegraff and Johnny; brother and sister-in-law, Robert Thompson and Katherine; sister, Helen Rogers; grandchildren, Elisha Hopkins, Rikki Neel, Daniel Hopkins, Kris Scifres, Jack Preston Deaton, and Emily Deaton; great grandchildren, Onvi Garcia, Dorothy Garcia, Brityn Howeth, Taran Neel, Kellan Neel, Bradley Hopkins, Cecilia Hopkins, Olivia Hopkins, Emily Hopkins, Kylie Scifres, Tyler Scifres, and Thomas Deaton; and great-great grandson, James Daniel Hopkins; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
Dorothy Fay Thompson Young was accomplished in crocheting, sewing, cooking and could pretty much do anything she set her mind to. She was an amazing mother to three children, Donald, Priscilla and Cecilia. She made their clothing, made sure they ate good wholesome home cooked meals, taught them how to dress properly and act respectful and to have good behavior in public. She taught them by example how to respect the elders of the family and society. She was always a lady.
After raising her children, Dorothy embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with the love of her life. Preston Ottis Young and they drove an 18-wheeler as a team. Dorothy was one of the FIRST female commercial long-haul drivers in the world, yes, THE WORLD! She has logged enough miles behind the wheel to be the equivalent of circling the earth 12 times! She and Preston drove for Road Runner Trucking for three years. For every 100,000 miles, they were awarded with a brand-new truck! In those three years they were awarded 9 trucks! That is over 900,000 miles in 3 years! She drove many more miles for other companies for two decades. They were known all over the US and Canada as the couple who wore matching shirts in which she made.
When she was not driving the rig, she and Preston loved to take off on their motorcycle with a little trailer filled with gear. Rain or shine, wind or snow, they did not mind as long as they were together. Together was their way. They just celebrated 66 years of a marriage filled with traveling after all that was their love language and they spoke it fluently, A true trail blazer for women, A beautiful soul with a more beautiful smile, Her laugh and dry since of humor will be terribly missed. But she will forever live in our hearts. She will always be amazing.
A grandmother of 8 grand, 14 great grand, 1 great great grand and one on the way
