Funeral services for Edwin D. Battise, 74, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Presbyterian Church, on the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, in Livingston, Texas with C.R.E. Debra Kleinman officiating. Interment will follow in the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 15, 2015 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas.
Mr. Battise was born June 10, 1940 in Polk County, Texas on the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation to parents, Fred Battise and Minnie Ora (Thompson) Battise, and passed away April 14, 2015 in Woodville, Texas. During his life, he was a proud member of the Bear Clan. He was an avid sports fan, especially for University of Texas and the New York Yankees. He also was a lifetime member of the Amateur Softball Association and coached the Houston Indians and the Livingston 49ers softball teams. He was a former basketball player and was a member of the state champion basketball team of Big Sandy in 1957. Edwin also served as a basketball official for the City of Houston. In addition to being a lover of sports, he served as Chairman of the Tribal Elders. He was also a former Tribal Councilman. In the church, he served as a deacon, elder, and former Clerk of Session. In addition to his many church related activities, Edwin served on the transportation staff for Vacation Bible School and was an Indian Presbyterian Church Representative at state Presbyterian Church Representative at state Presbyterian meetings. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janie (Sylestine) Battise; son, Brian E. Battise; step-son, Allen Sanders; brother, Virgil Battise; sister, Annie K. Langley; and nephew, Linus Battise.
He is survived by his daughter, Blanche Thompson and Sheldon of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation; grandchildren, Shelby Thompson and Taylor Thompson; great-grandchildren, Hunter Thompson and Gunner Thompson; sister-in-law, Bartha Battise of Elton, Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Deloris Johnson and 2 nd Chief Herbert Johnson of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, Beryl Battise of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation; brother-in-law, Amon Sylestine and Deborah of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, Ralph Bradford and JoAnne of Bedias, Texas; nephews, Jason Rayne Langley and Raven Langley both of Elton, Louisiana; nieces, Karen Williams and Kerri Williams both of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation, Patricia Langley and Chester of Elton, Louisiana; great-great nephew, Nicholas Wyman Williams; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
