Obituary

Funeral services for Esther Battise age 99 of Livingston will be held Friday February 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Indian Village Presbyterian Church in Livingston with Elder Debra Battise-Kleinman. Pallbearers will be Nick Battise, Derek Battise, Garrett Battise, Gregory Battise, Patrick Battise, Carlos Bullock, Rayne Langley and Raven Langley. Alternate Pallbearers will be David Battise & Danny Battise. Honorary Pallbearers will be Donnis Battise and Glendon Bullock.

She was born November 2, 1911 in Polk County, Texas the daughter of McConnico Battise and Mabel Sylestine Battise, and she passed away February 1, 2011 in Woodville, Texas. She was a member of the Bear Clan and was the oldest living member of the Reservation. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Chief Kina Fulton Battise and Benjamin Battise, her sisters, Ivey Battise, Eula Battise, Louise Mae Battise and Ninnie Battise.

Esther Battise came from a long line of Chiefs and leaders of the Alabama Coushatta Tribe. She lived to be the age of 99.

Sub-Chief Colabe Sylestine was her great grandfather, who was a co-signer of a document presented to the Texas State Legislature seeking assistance for the tribe. It was granted, and the Indian Reservation was established. Washington Sylestine, son of Sub-Chief Colabe was her grandfather.

Chief Sunkee Charlie Thompson was her uncle, he went to Washington D.C. seeking assistance for the tribes and it also was granted. Government homes, buildings and schools were built and additional lands were added to the present reservation.

Chief Ti-Cai-Che Branson Cooper Sylestine was her uncle, her mother' brother. Chief Kina Robert Fulton Battise was her brother, he served as Chief of the tribe for 58 years. Chief Colabe Atokla Emmett Battise was her double first cousin. Chief Oscola Clayton Sylestine is married to her niece. Chief Colabe III Clem Sylestine is her cousin son of Chief Ti-Cai-Che.

She is survived by Dorcas Bullock, sister, of the Reservation, Lawrine Battise, niece, of the Reservation, Zetha Battise, niece, of the Reservation, Ethelyn Sylestine, niece, of the Reservation, Mavis Marroquin, niece, of Terrell, Texas, Naomi Battise, niece, of the Reservation, Donnis Battise, nephew, of the Reservation, Glendon Wayne Bullock, nephew, of the Reservation, Michael Traweek and Stephanie Hawkins Voss, special children that she raised.
