Obit for Frank Leonard Myers
June 28, 1913 to August 7, 2012
Ordinary men strive to life extraordinary in order to be great. Great men lead ordinary lives with extraordinary strive. Frank Leonard Myers, 99 years young, was a great man. He was born on June 28, 1913 to father Joseph Harrison Myers and mother, Luella Georgana James Myers. He was born and raised on his family' fourth generation farm in Cassoday, Kansas. At a time when many young men did not graduate from high school, Frank was able to graduate from Cassoday High School in 1932, while working the family farm and even had the opportunity to exercise dramatic flair in school productions and participate on the basketball team. He farmed the land through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. During this time he married Virginia Beck who would be his wife for over 70 years, until her untimely death in 2007. They had three beautiful children together. After moving to Texas and trying his hand at shrimping, Frank became a First Class Operator with Dow Chemical Company. While at Dow, he built his first home from the ground up. When he retired in 1975, he moved to a second house he then built in Wild Country, Livingston, Texas. Together, Frank and Virginia traveled to locations throughout the United States and around the world including the Holy Land, the United Kingdom and other European countries. Born a farmer and having been a farmer most of his early adult life, Frank continued to grow spectacular gardens wherever he lived. In his retirement years, he was noted for his large beautifully maintained gardens and amazingly delicious produce. He also had a green thumb with the flowers and always brought his wife fresh flowers from the garden. Purchasing a gift for him was never hard. He was always happy to receive roasted peanuts and he even grew them on his own. Frank often stated when asked what the secret was for his long life, he would reply ""Nuts"". He was quite handy around the house and could be found helping neighbors and climbing roofs to make repairs even into his early 90'. One of his hobbies was building birdhouses for his family and friends. He will be remembered not only for his gardening and kind heart, but for his quick wit and intelligent conversations about life, politics, and just about anything he could bend your ear around.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, one brother and three sisters. He is survived by two half-brother, Joe and wife, Reta Myers of Mineola, Texas, and Harold and Yvonne Myers of Ft. Worth, Texas. His legacy lives on in three children: Delores Jones from Livingston, Texas, Shirley Openshaw of Angleton, Texas, and Jack Myers and wife, Mary from Corpus Christi, Texas. He has eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and seventeen great-great grandchildren who all knew and loved him dearly. The family would like to express special thanks to Lighthouse Hospice. The family has asked that instead of flowers, donations be made to Frank' church, the First United Methodist Church of Livingston, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM on Friday, August 10, 2012, at First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Texas. Dr. Don Willis is conducting the services. Following the church service, interment will be held at Peebles Cemetery in Livingston.
