Mr. Matthews was born on February 22, 1937 in Joaquin, Texas and passed away on June 8, 2014 in Livingston, Texas. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, during the Vietnam War, serving from 1956-1971; he retired from the military. He celebrated 54 years of marriage with his wife, Linda Sue (Ray) Matthews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Turner and Lois (Bolton) Matthews; and sister, Baby Girl Matthews.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Matthews of Livingston, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca Thomson and Carl of Livingston, Texas and Mary Neely and Timothy of League City, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, George Ray Matthews Jr. and Kristy of Ellisville, Mississippi; grandchildren, Rachale Bulanek, Christopher Matthews, Sarah Neely, Caleb Neely, Naomi Neely, Bryan Matthews, and Jared Matthews; great-granddaughter, Evelyn Bulanek; brothers, Jimmy Matthews of Center, Texas and Johnny Matthews and wife Madeline of Kingwood, Texas; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Mr. Matthews will be escorted to his grave by pallbearers, Joseph Matthews, Jud Matthews, Jim Matthews, Brandon Matthews, Christopher Matthews, Kory Bulanek, Melvin Sheffield, and Tim Neely. Honorary pallbearers: Jared Matthews, Bryan Matthews, Johnny Thomson, and Caleb Neely.
