IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Henry
Mcloughlin
March 15, 1931 – June 15, 2022
Visitation services for George Henry McLoughlin, 91, of Houston, Texas, will be held Saturday, June 15, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Camp Ruby Cemetery in Livingston, Texas.
George Henry McLoughlin, who went by the name "Jim," aged 91 years, passed away peacefully on June 15th at the home he shared in Houston with his wife, Norma. Jim was born in Weehawken, New Jersey, but moved to New Orleans, Louisiana when he was 8. He had a large family, being one of 7 children born to Thomas Joseph and Aglaee Cassard McLoughlin; the other children were Thomas Joseph ("TJ"), John Ralph, Thelma ("Bootsy"), Louise Agnus ("Weezy"), Dorothy ("Dot"), and Grace. Jim spent most of his life in New Orleans, until he and Norma moved to Houston in 1989.
Jim served in the navy during the Korean War, stationed at various places, including Hawaii and Japan. When he came back to the US after the war he attended college at LSU, graduating in 1959. Jim later worked for 34 years at Sandoz as a pharmaceutical sales representative, which provided him with the opportunity to travel throughout the country.
Even though Jim was born in New Jersey, his family's roots were in New Orleans, and Jim had a deep interest in the history and culture of New Orleans. He had a love for all things New Orleans, including creole tomatoes, hogshead cheese, and creole cream cheese. This love also extended to his family history, and after retiring he authored books on the Cassard and the Copping families. In addition he also authored a book on federal revenue agents' pursuit of pirates in Louisiana in the early 1800s called Pirates on the Mississippi.
Jim was a great storyteller, with amusing stories about growing up in depression era New Orleans and his numerous jobs during that time, including delivering ice in the middle of the night and working behind a bar, all before he was 12 years old, and about his time spent in the navy and travelling around the world.
Jim is survived by his wife, Norma Gene McLoughlin (nee Hammond); his sons, James Mitchell McLoughlin and Michael William McLoughlin; his daughter-in-law, Alysse Beth McLoughlin (nee Kaplan); and his grandchildren, Matthew and Bridget.
