Greg Helm was born in Robinson, Illinois on February 11 th , 1948 to parents Glenard Helm and Elizabeth Gurnee Howard Helm. He graduated from Robinson High School in 1966. On September 7 th , 1968, Greg married Carol Ferguson at First Christian Church in Findlay, Illinois. Greg continued his studies at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois, where he earned his bachelor's of science in education in 1970 and pursued his master's in kinesiology.
After earning his degree, Greg began his teaching career in Jamaica Community Unit School District but was interrupted after one year when he was drafted by the United States Army. Greg served two years as a Spec 4 radio/television audio specialist, primarily at Fort Benning, Georgia. After his military service, Greg returned to the Jamaica school district, where he taught from 1973 until 1985.
In 1985, Greg and Carol moved to Texas, where he taught world history, military history, and United States history at the junior high and high school levels in Goodrich, Livingston, and Conroe ISDs. He retired from teaching in 2009. During his 39-year teaching career, Greg also served as a head coach for both football and baseball. For many years, Greg was the public address announcer for the Livingston Lions junior high, freshman, junior varsity, and varsity football games. He was instrumental in creating the Livingston High School softball team and served as the team's first head coach.
Greg traveled extensively as a Civil War re-enactor. He was proud to be a descendent of both Union and Confederate soldiers, and held memberships in both the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Sons of Union Veterans, as well as the American Legion. As a re-enactor, Greg held the rank of Sergeant Major in the Fifth Brigade of Cleburne's Division.
Greg enjoyed fishing, hunting, softball, and pinochle. He was deeply devoted to his Christian faith and loved his family and friends, his students, and his dogs.
Greg is survived by Carol, his wife of 17,223 days; daughter Debbie and her husband Bob Yancy of New Caney, TX; daughter Micki and her husband Chauncey Lindner of Bryan, TX; grandson Robbie Yancy and his wife Michelle of Tomball, TX; grandson Marcus Williams and his wife Rebecca of Peculiar, MO; grandchildren Lauren, Lana, and Lucas Hightower; and great-grandchildren Braden and Alexandra Williams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son John Andrew, his brother Robert Helm, his sister Louise Kaley and her husband Vaughn, and his sister Virginia Luffman and her husband Clifford.
Visitation will be held Sunday November 8 th from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, TX. Please join us for a celebration of Greg's life on Monday November 9 th at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Livingston, TX.
