Obituary

Memorial services for Gregory Allen Poynter, 60, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas with Fred Gonzales officiating.

Greg was born November 10, 1958 in Topeka, Kansas to parents, Herbert Morrell Poynter and Retha May (Savage) Poynter, and passed away May 4, 2019 in Livingston, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents. During his life, Greg was an Air Force Brat and attended schools in Goldsboro, North Carolina, Springfield, Nebraska and Guam. He graduated from Springfield Platteview High School in 1977.

In 1996, his life was forever changed - Greg met the love of his life, Vicky. In her, he had finally found his refuge, his soul-mate, his best friend, career partner and dance partner for life. He started with the Sonic Drive-In Corporation and was an area manager until September of 1998 when Vicky and Greg became the owners of the Sonic here in Livingston. It was here through hard work and dedication that they were able to have one of the highest volume stores for a number of years, but most importantly, they were able to impact the lives of so many young employees. Some of the most heart-warming and moving moments for Greg's family, were to meet the countless young people that Greg and Vicky had positively impacted through the years. Greg had shown them how to choose a path to be successful in life by adopting a strong work ethic, accountability, discipline and just plain old unconditional love. He was always the first one to lend a helping hand to a friend, neighbor or even to a complete stranger. In 2005, when Hurricane Rita hit, Greg and Vicky assisted by feeding the first responders and families displaced by the storm. When they had exhausted ways to assist others, he came home to clean up their lakeside retreat, only to find that his neighbors had already cleaned up.

Greg loved spending time with his family and friends. He had a strong sense of adventure and loved to travel, go boating, riding his Harley, swapping stories, and country music. Greg loved the beautiful message that the songs delivered, but most of all, he loved twirling his beloved bride, Vicky, across the dance floor – that was his heaven on earth.

He is survived by his beautiful and devoted wife of 22 years, Vicky Poynter of Livingston, Texas; son, Ryne Lindley and wife, Sunny of Elysian Fields, Texas; daughter, Cede Newton and husband, Stephen of Elysian Fields, Texas; grandchildren, Haley Lindley, Rylan Lindley, Rhett Lindley, and Ella Grace Newton; mother-in-law, Patsy Oglesby of Amarillo, Texas; brother, Steve Poynter and wife, Kim of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sisters, Teri Vierregger and husband, Roger of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Susan Meline and future husband, Schram of Louisville, Nebraska; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends.

In keeping with Greg's values of being an advocate for community organizations, his family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to any of the following organizations:
