Gwendolyn "Honey" Simons, age 93 of Onalaska, passed from this life on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in Livingston, Texas.

She was born Gwendolyn Lena Tanner on November 18, 1923 in Onalaska, Texas to Ernest Alvin and Ova Cleo (Carlisle) Tanner, but was known to most as Honey, and to some of her family as Aunt Sister. Raised in Polk County, Honey graduated from Livingston High school, then attended the University of Houston for two years. On October 1, 1942, she married Thomas Irwin "Tommy" Simons after courting for only a week. As the wife of an Air Force member, Honey enjoyed many adventures and lived in Guam, Puerto Rico, Kansas, and California, before returning to Texas. With Tommy, she traveled all over the world by way of ships and planes.

While residing in California, Honey was the youth director for March Air Force base. She was always involved with youths and their needs, even teaching a Bible study class for teens in Puerto Rico. Upon returning to Livingston, she was the Director of the Chamber of Commerce for nearly 20 years, and was instrumental in developing the Miss Polk County Pageant, which is still held every year. After leaving the Chamber, Honey went to work at KETX radio for over 18 years. Many people may remember "Miss Honey's" daily radio program. Honey always enjoyed being around people and loved a great story!
