Maurice Harlan Camp, aged 86, passed away on August 5, 2022 in Livingston, Polk County, Texas. Harlan was born on a snowy day, February 9, 1936 in Palestine, Texas to the late Irene (Hunter) and Allie Burns "Bud" Camp. Harlan graduated from Sour Lake High School (class of 1955), and held a bachelor's of science degree in agriculture and a master's degree in education from Sam Houston State University.
Harlan was a well-beloved high school history and biology teacher, as well as a bus driver for the Livingston Independent School District. He also served as a coach for the girls' high school basketball and track teams. As a result of his efforts in the late 1960's, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) recognized for the first time girls' track as a full sport equal to boys' track. Additionally, he and the late coach Miriam Young worked with the UIL to inaugurate full-court girls' basketball in the state of Texas around the same time.
Harlan was an active member of First Baptist Church, Livingston where he served as chairman of the deacons, Sunday school teacher, youth mentor, children's church minister, and bus driver. He also was a founding, 40-year member of the Livingston Gideons International chapter and faithfully participated in their prison ministry at the Polk County jail. Additionally, Harlan was an avid bird watcher, photographer and master naturalist, and along with Frances and other community members, founded the Pineywoods Bird and Bloom Club.
Harlan is survived by his wife of 65 years, France L. (Bond) Camp and their daughter, Rev. Kimberly K. (Camp) Orr. He is also survived by his brothers, Howard (and wife Leola) and Don (and wife Sally) Camp, grandson Josiah Orr, granddaughter Miriam Hall (and husband Clay), great grandchildren, Ellie, Sam, and Micah, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, classmates, former students, and friends. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Franklin, Vernon, and Bobby, and two infant sisters.
