Obituary

Funeral services for Helen Gay Cox age 96 of Livingston, Texas will be held Monday November 15, 2010 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston with Rev. Mitchell Murphy and Bro. Denton Maze officiating. Interment will follow in the Magnolia Hill Cemetery in Livingston. Pallbearers will be Keith Jordan, Hunter Maze, Joshua Maze, Scott Blakely, James Hendrix, Christopher Murphy, Joe Crumpler and Olan Cain. Honorary Pallbearers will be Casey Murphy, Seth Maze, Joel Wood, Clayton Weeks, Keith Gay, Olan Underwood, Bobby Gay, Arnold Oliver, John L. Williams, John Williams, John Peu, Forrest Brackin, Charles Wheeler, Dan Cain, Hershal Mackey, James Moore, Marvin Martin and R.D. Hendrix.

She was born August 9, 1914 in the Magnolia Hill Community, Segno, Texas to the late Thomas (Tom) Mansfield McCormack and Lenora Victoria Williams McCormack, and passed away November 12, 2010 in Lufkin, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ben Gay, Mattie Jordan, daughter, Loyce Wood, sister, Eva Dell Hendrix, sister, John Henry McCormack, baby brother, and 2nd husband Van Z. Cox.

Mrs. Gay received her elementary education in the Magnolia Hill, Holly Grove Schools and graduated from Livingston High School in May of 1933. On March 28, 1934 she married Richard Benjamin (Ben) Gay.

She was known as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She loved her church, working in her flower and vegetable garden, and traveling to see what her Lord had created for man. She was a member of the Magnolia Hill Baptist Church form 1926 until her death.

Mrs. Gay was a scholar of the Bible, taught many age groups of Sunday School, was the church secretary, sang in the choir, was a dedicated member of her church, and a devoted worker for the betterment of the community. She was an international founding member of the Phi Sigma Alpha Chapter of the Texas Beta Psi Sorority and Daughters of the Nile of the Arabian Temple of Houston. She was also a member, organizer, treasurer, and fourth point of the star, Martha, of the Livingston Chapter No. 1139 Order of the Eastern Star as well as a member and fourth point of the star, Martha, of the Kountze Chapter No. 724 Order of the Eastern Star. Other organizations to which she belonged were the Polk County Historical Society, Robert Rankin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Livingston Memorial Medical Center of East Texas Volunteer Auxiliary.

She is survived by Eva Maze, daughter of Livingston, Texas, Keith & Debra Jordan, grandson and wife of Vidor, Texas, Charlene & Art Wheeler, granddaughter & husband of Beaumont, Texas, Verdina & Mitchell Murphy, granddaughter & husband of Segno, Texas, Denton & Gina Maze, grandson & wife of Segno, Texas, great grandchildren are; Jessica & Wil Richardson, Scott & Farrah Blakley, Christopher & Jessica Murphy, Christina & Joel Wood, Courtney Murphy, Casey Murphy, Cory Maze, Hunter Maze, Joshua Maze and Seth Maze, great great grandchildren are; Seslee Wood, Roper Wood, Madison Wilson, Kaitlyn Wilson and Alexis Blakley.
