Homer Lynn Anderson passed from this earthly life into heaven on February 19th, 2016, at
the age of 80.
Homer was born in Anson, Texas, and knew from the time he was baptized at age 13
that he wanted to become a minister. He received bachelor's degrees in Bible and English
from Abilene Christian University. He worked as a bank teller while in college. Homer
married Maxine Whitehead of Lometa on September 2nd, 1955. From Abilene, the
Andersons moved to Fort Davis where Homer worked as a bank cashier. Homer and Maxine established a congregation of the Church of Christ in Fort Davis. Homer went into full-time
preaching in Rush Springs, Oklahoma, and later moved to Enid, Oklahoma, to continue
preaching the gospel. The Andersons then moved to Canberra, Australia, where they
established a Church of Christ and served as missionaries from 1967 to 1972. After returning to the states, the Andersons served Churches of Christ in the Texas towns of Stafford, Lake
Jackson, Snyder, and Alice with Homer as pulpit minister and Maxine helping lead the ladies' ministries. In January 2008, Homer began preaching at Onalaska Church of Christ and
continued preaching there until the time of his passing. His humility, work ethic and yearning to reach both the faithful and the lost in his community were only a few of the many
characteristics that were a tribute to his great generation.
Homer looked forward to taking trips with Maxine to visit family. He especially
enjoyed playing games at family reunions and traveling to see his grandchildren to help them celebrate graduations and weddings.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine (Whitehead) Anderson of Onalaska, Texas; sons, Brad Anderson of Lytle, Texas, Greg Anderson of Denton, Texas, and Lane Anderson of Odessa, Texas; daughter, Kim Funkhouser of Russelville, Arkansas; grandchildren, Marcus Perez, Jonathan Funkhouser, Luke Anderson, and Jake Anderson; sister-in-law Docie Anderson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Homer's last weekly church bulletin article, titled "Overcoming Worry," ended with
the following: "After Jesus told us not to worry about what we shall eat, drink or wear, He
said, 'But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be
added to you' (Matthew 6:33). Love, Homer."
