Iverson (Ike) Barnett DeLaney was born in Lufkin, Texas to Frances Nell Chambers and Letus Arthur Delaney on June 5, 1937. Ike attended most of his elementary school years in Goodrich. His family relocated to Pasadena, Texas where he completed the remainder of his public education, thus graduating from Pasadena High School in 1956. He attended San Houston State University, while continuing to help his parents operate the family business at the Goodrich Telephone Exchange. Much later in life, he completed his vocational teaching certification through Texas A&M University and taught Automotive Repair in Pasadena ISD for many years.
Ike DeLaney and Mary Ruth Dominy eloped in March of 1959 and were married in the home of Pat and Ellen Long of Goodrich, Texas. The event was officiated by Pat Long and witnessed by Mary's sister, Annette Dominy Lowe, and brother-in-law, Bobby Joe Lowe. The couple resided in Pasadena for most of their marriage before retiring to Polk County in 2005.
During that time, Ike held a variety of jobs in addition to his previous mentioned teaching career. He was a successful salesman for the Flowers' Sunbeam Bread Bakery of Houston, and later, for Frito-Lay. Mr. DeLaney owned and operated a series of businesses including Ike's Small Engine Repair, Ike's Automotive Repair, Partner's Marine and Automotive Repair with long-time friend, Bill Thames, and a machine shop. Nothing gave him more joy than taking something apart, putting it back together, and/or teaching someone else to do the same.
Iverson was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Ruth DeLaney; parents, Letus and Frances DeLaney; brother, Robert Arthur Delaney; nephews, Christopher and David DeLaney; in-laws, Leon and Louise Dominy, and Bill and Zeffa Dominy.
