J. Leah
Berlin
December 10, 1939 – October 10, 2019
J. Leah Nile Berlin, aka Culp for 37 years, died of complications from a long standing aneurysm at age almost 80 on October 9, 2019. Leah and her siblings spend their youth in the Ohio River Valley, the children of R. Hugh Nile, Sr. (1935), member of the Scottish Rite Shriners and the Ohio Ceramic Engineers, and Rhea Thompson Miller, past worthy matron of Order of the Eastern Star and president of Ohio Valley Industrial Nurses Association. Leah was the youngest student at Ohio Valley Business College when she was just 10. She earned union wages decorating hotel porcelain for Sterling China from ages 16-21 while graduating 2nd in her class from Wellsville High. She matriculated to Mt. Union College where she worked for Hon. William Lincoln Hart, Chief Justice of Ohio State Supreme Court. Mrs. Berlin was an officer of the following organizations during a long career of civic service: • Captain Wilkes PTA on Bainbridge Island, WA (President) • Jay-C-ettes Glen Burnie, MD (President) • American Association of University Women, Livingston, TX (President) • Municipal Judge's section of the State Bar of TX (Chair) • Episcopal Church Women Alvin, TX AAUW (secretary) Leah was food editor and columnist for ten years for Annapolis' Maryland Gazette, the oldest continuously published paper in the US (1727). She was a longstanding member of Alpha Xi Delta fraternity. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 2 years and a Camp Fire Girls Leader form 1974-1980 during which time she backpacked 200 miles White Water canoed 150 miles and group camped 50 nights with her 22 Camp Fire Girls. She is certified to teach public school in OH, MS, MI, MD, WA, OR, and CA and TX and certified to teach English, Business, Health, and Home Economics in TX Public Schools. Leah earned her juries doctorate from Baltimore School of Law (1982), gaining licensure I n TX state, Federal Courts and the US Supreme Court. Mrs. Berlin practiced law from 1983 until 2000, including founding her own firm until she retired to return to public school teaching. Leah and her cousin Jacqueline Kennedy Summerland were certified as Olympic Judges in Canoeing. Leah is predeceased by her husband Msgt. Ret. George E. Berlin, his daughter Rebecca Berlin, Becky's son Michael, Leah's cousin Jacque, sister Gretchen Nile Baldwin, Gretchen's son David, and a beloved brother in law George E. Culp. She is survived by her twin sister J. Rhea Nile Brown, her brother R. Hugh Nile, Jr. and her daughters and their families; Dr. Wendy Blount, Russ von Allmen, Diana Culp, and Karen and Tim Burleson, and Cathy and Nolan Johnson. Leah will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews, Gretchen, Aaron, Amber, Alexis, Jeaux and Douglas and her first two grandchildren Jake and Rae Harris who were included in her in her canoe and trail adventures. Jake and Rae are married to Ashley Wood and Sage Lovell. Leah's grandchildren include Savannah Bartley, Cody Weicht, great granddaughters Camie Bartley, Aubrey Harris, Laila, Ava and Kenzie Stewart as well as great nephews and nieces. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the R. Hugh Nile Library Memorial Fund, Mt. Union Univ
