He moved to Livingston at the age of twelve when his parents moved to Livingston to take care of his grandmother Helen Garvey. After graduation from Livingston High School in 1949 he attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth TX playing football and pursuing his education. While there he met and married Verna Faye Wallum on September 4, 1952. They were married for 65 years! They returned to Livingston in February of 1953 where they were blessed with two children, Jack Garvey Jackson Jr. and Judy Dianne Jackson Hughes.
Jack worked with his father in the family feed store. It didn't take long for Jack's entrepreneurial spirit to kick in. He began selling Westinghouse appliances on behalf of Sam Houston Electric Cooperative and started Jackson's Farm & Electric Supply. He purchased Gerlach Hardware which became Jackson Hardware. Gerlach was a member of the Walter H. Allen Distributors that was purchased by True Value Hardware of Chicago, Illinois. After 36 years as a leading True Value hardware store he joined the Ace Hardware group. No visit to town was complete without a visit to Jackson's for feed, fresh eggs, seed, and hardware supplies. His annual "free baby chick" day became so large the streets had to be blocked off around the store. This was followed with "Free Tomato Plant Day" that also became an annual event.
Jack belonged to a number of organizations. He served on the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department holding the office of Treasurer. He was a long time member of the Livingston Lions Club holding numerous offices including President. He was a long time Chamber of Commerce member and was President in 1972. He was President of the Southwest Hardware Association. In that role he attended the National Hardware Association meeting in Washington DC and was privileged to represent the South and place a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He considered this such a great honor. He was co-founder and President of Key Southwest, a non-profit appliance buying group that grew to over 400 members under his leadership. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and served as the Sunday School Superintendent as well as many Church committees. He was a faithful member of Methodist Men. He was a member of the Church Planning Committee, the Hospital Community Board and the County Judicial Building Planning Committee. He also participated in Livingston Little League and the Athletic Booster Club.
He loved his Church and his family and showed it in many ways. His vision helped shape the Town of Livingston and his Church. He will be greatly missed.
The family requests that donations be made to the Moody S. Jackson and Jackie Jackson Endowment Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Livingston.
