Funeral services for Dr. Jackie Ray Elliott, 78, of Onalaska, Texas, will be held Monday, May 21, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Onalaska, Texas with Rev. Eric Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in the Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska, Texas. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 20, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home in Onalaska, Texas.
Dr. Elliott was born at home February 18, 1940 in Ashe County, North Carolina to parents, Carl Edward Elliott and Mamie Ruth (Ham) Elliott, and passed away May 18, 2018 in Onalaska, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents; and close cousin, Marvin Elliott.
During his life, Jackie graduated from Elizabethton High School in Elizabethton, Tennessee in 1958. He earned both his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts in 1962 and his Master of Arts in Industrial Education in 1972 from the East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. In 1975, he accomplished his goal as Doctor of Education from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Jackie also proudly served his country as a 1
st
Lt. in the United States Army. He was a professor at the Sam Houston State University for 25 years, and the former Mayor and council member in Oakhurst, Texas. He operated JE Custom Drafting for over 50 years. After moving to Onalaska he served eleven years on the Onalaska ISD school board, including the position of president.
Jackie enjoyed woodworking in his shop and the great hobby of square dancing. Jackie and Althea were officers in the Texas State Federation of Square and Round Dancers. They traveled all across Texas to dance and made friends where ever they went. He was an avid reader and accumulated thousands of books. He loved to watch football, especially the Tennessee Vols.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Althea Walker Elliott of Onalaska; sons, Edward Elliott of Coldspring, Scott Walker and wife, Jeannette of New Braunfels, and Kelley Walker and wife, Annette of Dayton; daughter, Kim Street and husband, Brad of Coldspring; grandchildren, Sarah Elliott, Emma Elliott, Chloe Walker, Quinton Walker, Aymie Walker, Clay Walker, Casey Street and wife, Jessica, and Savannah Golson and husband, Seth; and great-granddaughter, River Golson; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
