Funeral services for James Alvis Nettles, 86, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Friday, November 8, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Texas with Rev. James Frazier, Rev. Don Willis, Rev. Paul Woodworth, and Rev. Wayne Bickley officiating. Interment will follow Peebles Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas.
Mr. Nettles was born October 4, 1927 in Livingston, Texas and passed way November 4, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was a lifelong resident of Polk County, Texas, graduated from Livingston High School, and attended the First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Texas. He proudly served his country in the Company L 160th Infantry Regiment in the Korean War from 1950-1952 and will have military honors at Peebles Cemetery provided by the VFW Post 8568. After his service in the military, Mr. Nettles worked in the oil industry and for the Texas Highway Department. He later went on to survey for the Lake Livingston Dam Project, supervise the clearing for the Trinity River Authority, and went on to start his own business, Nettles Construction. Mr. Nettles was a lifelong cattle rancher, member of Texas Southwestern Cattle Raiser Association, Polk County Farm Bureau, VFW Post 8568, and American Legion 312. He loved outdoor hobbies such as hunting, fishing, and trapping and also enjoyed attending all of his grandchildren's sporting events. He is preceded in death by his parents: John "Jack" C. Nettles and Katie (Maze) Nettles; sister: Jewell Nettles; brothers: Jack Nettles, Glenn Nettles, and Kenneth Nettles; grandson: Robert Rustin Rowe.
Mr. Nettles is survived by his wife of 59 years: Mary (Bailey) Nettles of Livingston, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law: Arlene and John Richardson of Livingston, Texas and Elaine and Jerry Minter of Corrigan, Texas; son and daughter-in-law: Mike and Timber Lee Nettles of Livingston, Texas; grandchildren: Monica Gunter, Jeremy Richardson, Jamie Jones and husband Mark, Jana Starr and Brian, Rachele Arbuckle and husband Chad, Craig Nettles, Keven Nettles; great grandchildren: Sara Gunter, Riley and Ryan Richardson, Cole and Trent Jones, Connor and Kaleigh Starr, Jett and Kort Arbuckle, Kade Nettles; brothers and sisters-in-law: Wilson Nettles of Livingston, Texas, Aubrey Earl and Novie Nettles of Goodrich, Texas, Elmer and Hilda Nettles of Livingston, Texas, Floyd and Margie Nettles of Deer Park, Texas; sisters and brothers-in-law: Faye and Bob Hamilton of Spring, Texas, Dene and Lee Courtney of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Bettie and Pablo Paredes of Livingston, Texas; sisters-in-law: Barbara Nettles of Livingston, Texas, Cathy Richardson of Livingston, Texas, Rita Nettles of Livingston, Texas; in-laws: Leon and Georgia Bailey, Fannie Bussey, George and Mildred Bailey, Gene and Mary Bailey; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and lifelong friends.
