Jesus Maria Luna was born on November 28th, 1922 in Lemitar, New Mexico and raised nearby in Socorro, a small town south of Albuquerque. He was born to parents, Julian Luna and Barbarita (Gonzales) Luna and passed away on September 20, 2016 in Livingston, Texas. He is preceded in death by his wife, Corine Sanchez Luna.
Mr. Luna is survived by his son, Dr. Raymond Luna and wife, Grace of Livingston, Texas; daughters, Alice Luna Massey and husband, Pat of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mary Ann Luers and husband, Keith of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Priscilla Hurley and husband, Mike of Denver, Colorado, and Julie Luna and Miguel Trujillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren, Jeff Luna and wife, Vien, Ann Winston and husband, Sean, Megan Massey, Brian Massey, Audra Massey, Jonathan Luers, Nathan Luers and wife, Lydia, and Jessica Luers; great-grandchildren, Sean Lee Winston, and Abigail Luers; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
His family was quite poor, and he had to work throughout his early life to help with family income. He was always good at math and science and, after high school, he enrolled in the University of New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. College was interrupted by service in the Air Force as a navigator/bombardier stationed in England and flying missions over Germany in a B-17 bomber. As with many men who served in World War II, until he enlisted, he had never ventured far from his hometown. His experiences in the service were the source of many of his most vivid memories and stories.
After the war he returned to college, getting a degree in metallurgical engineering. He also courted and married Corine Sanchez. They moved to Albuquerque where he worked at Sandia National Laboratories until he retired at 65. Jesus and Corine had 5 children. They ran the household, as was the norm at that time, with Jesus holding a steady job, doing the heavy house repairs and yard work and Corine doing everything else. In 1983 Corine became ill with cancer and later Parkinson's disease. As she progressively lost the ability to continue domestic duties, to his children's amazement, he progressively assumed them. Toward the end of her life, he was the main one providing the near total care she needed. They were married for 66 years.
Jesus was a strong, steady, confident but unpretentious man. He was consistently loyal to his family and he will be missed.
