Jimmie Miriam Henry Dickens was born in Crockett, Texas, on September 28, 1932, to William Herman Henry and Melissa Angeline Henry; she passed away on November 22, 2017.
Jimmie graduated from Cleveland High School in 1949. She then attended Sam Houston State University where she received her BBA degree and later received her MA degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. It was during her undergraduate studies at SHSU that she met the love of her life, Lloyd Dickens; they were married on September 12, 1952. Shortly after their wedding, she joined Lloyd in California where he served in the United States Navy. While in California, they started their family having two daughters, Rebecca Jean and Paula Lynn. In 1960, Jimmie and Lloyd both left the corporate world and answered God's call to begin their lifetime mission of teaching. After four years in Huntington, Texas and 18 years in Sheldon, Texas, Lloyd and Jimmie moved to Livingston during the summer of 1983. Jimmie continued her teaching legacy as an English teacher at Livingston High School until her "retirement" in 1996. After these 34 years of public school teaching, she began her tenure of teaching at a private Christian school in Livingston, Polk County Christian Academy, until 2009. In her 47 years as an educator, Mrs. Dickens influenced countless students with her strong Christian faith and Biblically-grounded integrity. While in Livingston, Mrs. Dickens was also an active member of Central Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, VBS worker, and helped establish the church's annual Women's Retreat.
She is survived by her husband Lloyd Dickens, of 65 years; her daughter Rebecca Fraley and son-in-law Dennis of Bryan, Texas, and her daughter Paula Burk of Livingston. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Kristopher Fraley and wife Jeannette of Bryan, Texas; Scott Fraley and wife Brooke of Bryan, Texas; Melissa Fraley Williams and husband Derrick of Bryan, Texas; Laura Burk Simpson and husband Michael of Houston, Texas; and Samuel Burk and wife Ginger of The Woodlands, Texas.
She leaves her legacy of sixteen great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, Kristen, Katherine and William Fraley of Bryan, Texas; Brayden, Clayton and Paisley Fraley of Bryan, Texas; Clint, Kaicer and Kutter Williams of Bryan, Texas; Rebekah, Tyler and Savannah Simpson of Houston, Texas; and Andrew and Caroline Burk of The Woodlands, Texas. Her sister Alma Bernice Coleman and husband Kenneth currently reside in Huntsville, Texas.
