IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joe Thomas
Day, Sr.
May 24, 1924 – July 21, 2020
Joe Thomas Day, Sr. passed away on July 21, 2020 after suffering a stroke a few days before. Prior to the stroke, he lived a very long, happy and successful life. He was 96 years old.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will begin at 9am with the service to follow at 10am.
Mr. Day was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Leo Day, Sr. and was born in Conroe, Texas on May 24, 1924. He was the second oldest son of three brothers and one sister. His early years were spent in Rochelle, Louisiana.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Leo Day, Sr. and Bertha Hayes Day; brothers, Herbert Leo Day, Jr., Lee Franklin Day, James Clayton "Jimmy" Day; sister, Patricia Day Davis; son, Richard Douglas Day; and son in-law, Dino Momayezi.
Mr. Day is survived by his wife, Jewel E. Day; son, Joe Thomas Day, Jr. and wife Pat; daughter Jewel Momayezi; daughter, Jane Ellen (Dolly) Bialas and husband, James; grandchildren, Joe Thomas Day, III, and wife Jenny; Sheerin Ager and husband, Michael; Farrah Reid and husband, Mike; Kimberly Barnett and husband, Lane; Kellie Taglioli, and husband Don; Tobi Evans; Thomas Day; Courtney Simeone; Christy Walter, and husband Scott. He also has fourteen great grandchildren – Hannah, Haleigh, McKayla, Lillie, Judy, Donnie, JT, Peyton, Sofie, Alex, Vince, Karleigh, Kyler & Avery.
For anyone that knew him, you knew he was passionate about his family and his work. His family began when he met Jewel Everritt in Rochelle when she was twelve years old and he was fifteen. Their love and devotion was instant. They began to "court" and were married when she was seventeen years old and he was twenty on December 15, 1944. Their love for one another was as strong the day he left us, as it was on the day that they said I do.
Joe had an extensive career that spanned from 1945 to 1985. He became a machinist at Beaumont Iron Works in 1946. His career and his family were growing with the birth of Joe, Jr. in 1945 followed closely by Jewel in 1947 and then Richard in 1950.
In 1953 he became the night shift foreman of the heat exchanger assembly and welding department. In 1957 he was named Assistant Plant Superintendent and in 1960 he was named Superintendent. In 1959 the family grew a little more and a bit unexpectedly with the birth of Jane Ellen (Dolly) in 1959. When Beaumont Iron Works, now known as Alco closed in 1962, Joe was asked to join the Shaffer organization as Plant Superintendent where he remained for the next two years.
In 1964 he was given an opportunity to work at Metalver. His first assignment was in Veracruz, Mexico. He readily accepted this assignment and the whole family spent the summer of 1964 in Veracruz. The family had to return to Beaumont, but Joe remained until February, 1965.
Joe's final employer was C. F. Braun, now known as Santa Fe International. This was his favorite job of all. He moved the family to Houston, Texas in the summer of 1965. He spent the next twenty years as an inspector that traveled all over the United States to various machine shops. He loved the open road and he loved his job. He enjoyed telling stories of his travels and co-workers to his family. In 1985 he and Jewel moved to Livingston, Texas to retire. When retirement proved to be too boring, he started his own consulting business. Joe T. Day Consulting was born and continued for ten years. He finally retired completely in 1995.
In his later years, he enjoyed his association with the Livingston Lions Club where he made many lasting friendships. He also enjoyed serving as an usher at the First Methodist Church of Livingston and participating in Methodist Men.
Pallbearers are Henry Ager, Isaac Alexander, Stan Nadolski, Judson Pritchard, Dr. Michael Shukan and Bill Wiggins.
Honorary Pallbearers are the members of the Livingston Lions Club and Dr. Ray Perez
The family wishes to thank the many friends who have reached out to us with your love and support.
