John Cravey Alston, age 91 of Livingston, Texas, passed away on July 20, 2013 in Livingston. He was born on October 4, 1921 in Corrigan, Texas to parents, Henry Ditzley Alston and Hilma (Cravey) Alston.
John married Verna Jones in Moscow, Texas on February 10, 1946. He participated in the 1940 High School All State Football Game. He attended Southern Methodist University, where he played football, and Lon Morris Jr. College. He was a member of the Lion' Club for many years, Farm Bureau, the American Legion, and very active in the early Civil Defense Program in the county. As long as he was able, he was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church, serving as administrative board head and in many other capacities. After WWII, he and a few other men initiated the Men' Breakfast that is held every Friday morning at 6:00 AM.
John is preceded in death by both of his parents and his wife, Verna Alston. He is survived by his daughter, Dicki Lou Alston of Livingston; daughter and son-in-law, Libby and James Gibson of Huntsville; sister-in-law, Faye Alston of Livingston; granddaughter and husband, Elizabeth and Drew Morgan of Georgetown; granddaughter and husband, Nena and Tallan Metcalf of Huntsville; nephews, Hank Alston of Spring and Ditz Rabel of Cypress-Fairbanks; nieces, Cynthia Walter of England, Martha, Ann Rabel of Houston, and Sue of Weimar; most loving caregiver, Rita Alanis of Livingston; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
John will be escorted to his grave by pallbearers, George Harrell, Jerry Riley, John Gardner, Johnny Monk, Hank Alston, Ditz Rabel, Mike Dabney, and Mickey Nettles.
Services for John C. Alston will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 2:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Texas. Rev James Frazier, Dr. Don Willis, and Rev. Steve Woody will be officiating the service. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery in Livingston. Military Honors will be provided by VFW Honor Guard Post #8568.
Visitation will be held Monday, July 22, 2013 at 5:00 PM at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston.
