Obituary

Funeral services for John Ovelton Davis, 74, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Friday, January 17, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas with Bro. Trever Tucker and Bro. John Cox officiating. Military Honors will be provided by VFW Post #8568. Interment will follow in the Camp Ruby Cemetery. Visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, January 16, 2020 in the Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas.

Mr. Davis was born July 30, 1945 in Livingston, Texas to parents, Kale B. Davis and Annie Mae (Smith) Davis, and passed away January 11, 2020 in Livingston, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kale Bryant Davis and Luther Mur Davis; and sister, Myrlie Lee Wilson; along with many friends and special family members that have gone on before him such as Randy Morris, Ray Shown, Buddy Wiggins, Mac Gibson, Elton Hendrix, Coot Wilson, Sam Wilson, John Robert Pruitt, Kenneth Lamb, John Perry Richards, Bob Pruitt, Clint Davis, Butch Herring, and so many more. He had so many friends we could never name them all. John had a special place in his heart for all of the people of the Alabama Coushatta Indian Reservation.

He is survived by his loving wife, Vicky Davis of Livingston; son, Clint Davis and wife, Beverly of Livingston; daughters, Shelley Tucker and husband, Jared of Livingston, Lisa Humble and husband, Dale of Livingston; grandchildren, John Davis, Meagan Nelson, Zach Gardner, Alissa Overstreet, Trever Tucker, Cole Tucker, Blake Humble, and Balie Humble; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Ricky Davis and wife, Lux of Livingston; sister, Bessie Mae Lamb of Livingston; and special friends, Jennie Battise, Doyle Little, and Billy Mitchell; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relative and friends that he loved dearly.

During his life, John was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. John was a member of Sunflower Baptist church where he served as deacon. He was raised in Camp Ruby and attended School at Big Sandy ISD where he played basketball for Coach Ford King. He was a lifelong supporter of the Big Sandy Wildcats. After high school he joined the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in August of 1963. Upon returning to Polk County, John went to work in the logging woods where he cut logs with his dad and Fulton Battise. In 1966 John went to work for the Union Pacific railroad and on September 17th of that same year he married the love of his life, Vicky Machost Davis. John and Vicky started their family in December of 1968 and moved to Pasadena in June of 1969 where he began a 24 year career as a pipefitter for E I DuPont. After retiring he moved back to Camp Ruby to live out his retirement.

John had many hobbies and interest but what he loved most was farming, his John Deere tractor and deer hunting. In his younger days John enjoyed running deer with his hounds Ole Ben, Bob, Rowdy, Hobo and squirrel hunting with his squirrel dog, Sissy. John had many gardens over the years and gave away more vegetables and watermelons than he kept for himself.

He will be laid to rest Friday January 17th in the Camp Ruby cemetery not far from the forks of Double Branch the place he always called home.
