A lifelong Christian, Joyce Jeneane Hendrix Fields was called up to Heaven by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on August 24, 2019, at the age of 84. Adored by family and friends alike, Joyce was the epitome of selflessness, caring and charm throughout her life.
Joyce was born on April 25, 1935, in Livingston, TX. She grew up in a loving home with her parents, William Elias Hendrix and Bessie Mae Moye Hendrix, and her only brother, Shirald Dean Hendrix, in Dallardsville, TX. Joyce graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1952, where she achieved high academic scores, was a varsity cheerleader and played sports. She was voted by the student body as "Most Beautiful." At Big Sandy, she met the young man who would become her husband of nearly 57 years, Thomas Glenn Fields. They were married on August 11, 1956, in Livingston. While Glenn attended Rice University on a basketball scholarship, Joyce graduated from Durham Business School in Houston in 1953. She later became a secretary for Brown and Root Construction. In October 1959, Joyce left the U.S. and moved to Büdingen, Germany, to be with Glenn while he was stationed there as part of the U.S. Army's occupation force. While in Germany, Joyce taught elementary school. After Glenn completed his military service, they moved to Corpus Christi, TX, in September 1963. It was there, they adopted their only son, Daryl Glenn Fields, in May 1966. After stops in Houston and Austin, Glenn and Joyce moved to Marble Falls, TX, in 1974, where they lived together for over 40 years until Glenn passed away on August 10, 2013, one day shy of their 57th wedding anniversary. While Glenn provided insurance services in Marble Falls, Joyce discovered her talent in sales, marketing and merchandizing. Joyce worked in several stores including Madalyn's, the Wood Shed, and Lynette's Merle Norman. Joyce was famous for her window designs, artistic skills and gorgeous gift wrapping. For Joyce, everything centered on her family, friends and of course, Dr. Pepper! She was a loyal "10, 2 and 4" girl! She enjoyed all things outdoors including travel, gardening, playing tennis and boating. Her passion, though, was all things Christmas. Every year, Joyce would spend weeks converting their home into the "North Pole of the South" complete with almost 40 Christmas Trees—each with its own theme—and close to 100 pieces of Department 56 Snow Village. Joyce, who was known for her warm hospitality, was the subject of a feature article in the local newspaper dubbing her "Mrs. Claus."
Besides being a dutiful and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother, one of her greatest achievements was surviving a stroke and beating colon cancer in August 2010.
Joyce is survived by her son, Daryl, and his wife, Laura Fields of San Marcos, TX, and her five grandchildren—Brandon, Dylan, Lindsey, Brady and Lacey; her brother, Shirald, and his wife, Suzy Hendrix of The Woodlands, TX; brother-in-law Joe Fields and his wife, Judy, of Deer Park, TX; and, nieces and nephews Kayla and Linn Fields, Contessa and Todd Fields, and Angie and Tony Tieman, all of Deer Park; Deana and Art Kirby of San Antonio; Kim and Scott Skoneki of Montgomery, AL; and Brandi and Dean Hendrix of Montgomery, TX. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, her parents, Bessie and Elias, in-laws Edna and Thomas Fields, and sister-in-law Ann Hendrix.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Leo Club, a leadership and service program for students at San Marcos Baptist Academy. Her grandchildren are part of this program which fosters a lifetime commitment to helping others while enhancing the community. Donations may be sent to SMA Leo Club, Attn: Mrs. Rhonda McNeil, 2801 Ranch Road 12, San Marcos, TX 78666, or to the charity of your choice.
