Rastus and Delores were married on July 5, 1956, at young ages by special pastor of Magnolia Hill Baptist Church, Edgar Pat Long. Rastus was ordained a deacon in his Church at a young age as they raised their sons in Church at Magnolia Hill Baptist Church. In 1968, they moved their family to Central Baptist Church where he served as a deacon until his health forced him to become a Deacon Emeritus. Rastus served as Deacon
Chairman three years at Central during the time his good friend and Pastor Bill Kennedy passed and Dr. Bill Skaar was called as pastor of Central. He worked in the youth department and the senior adult department and drove the church bus for youth and adult trips. His life before he lost his health was serving the Lord at Central.
Rastus was a hard worker all his life until he became disabled in 2008. His first job was at age 11 at Perry Brothers 5 and 10 store in Livingston, working for CL King. Later, he worked for June Marsh in his hardware store and at his farm, working cows and hay. He was a star center on the Lions Basketball team, went to school at Livingston High School and worked all through his school years. After Rastus and Delores Married, they moved to Baytown and he delivered mail for the Post Office in Baytown. Later, he worked for Pittsburgh Paint and Glass in Houston, first as a salesman and later as a store manager. In 1965, the family moved back to Livingston and built the family house they still live in on Jack Nettles Rd. Jerry and Greg were 9 and 6 years old then.
Rastus worked with the Rodeo Association in Livingston and the boys rode horses in play days and rodeos. Rastus was recognized a few years ago as one of the outstanding people who helped build and develop the Polk County Youth Rodeo Association. Rastus also helped to build the Pasadena Youth Riding Club in Pasadena during a period that he ran a Pittsburgh Paint/Glass store in Pasadena. Jerry and Greg rode horses in the Club.
When they built their house, city water was not available to them. Rastus investigated how to start a community water system, went door to door and got people to sign up to start a water system. He was successful in getting the Providence Water Supply System started, the first such water system in Polk County, in the 60s.
In 1968, he joined in partnership to own a hardware store, M & M Sales Center, in Livingston. After that, he formed his own painting business that grew into his 35 year successful business, M & M Pipeline Maintenance Inc. He owned and managed this business for about 35 years. After falling on the pipeline in 2008 and breaking his right leg, he sold his business in 1969 and retired due to health issues.
In the 60s, Rastus was a dedicated member of the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department. He served as an officer and faithful member. He was also on the men's pumper team and Delores was on the women's pumper team, at a time when the Fire Department was very successful in pumper competition and B. R. Haynes was chief.
Delores often said that "Rastus deserves a special star in his crown in Heaven." In 1980, Delores quit her job at First National Bank and began college at Sam Houston University, at the same time the boys were attending college also. Rastus took on the full responsibility of supporting the family and four college students. This says it all about Rastus' love for family. He worked hard, God provided, and everyone graduated with a degree.
Rastus loved: Delores and the family, Central Baptist Church, Joy Sunday School Class, his farm at Segno and the hunting lease, having cows at the farm, flying, fishing, hunting, old fashioned gospel music, his employees, watching basketball and football, our home. He loved life and having fun teasing and joking with others. He was a giving person, loved giving and helping others. Psalm 37:23 "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord and He delights in his way."
