Obituary

Linda Small was a citizen of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Nation of Texas and very proud of it. She was born on the Reservation November 1, 1945, to parents Eleanor and Woodrow Battise, both fullblood members of the Tribe. Linda died on November 2, 2015, at her home in The Woodlands after an extended illness. She was raised in circumstances which, while not rich materially, were rich in her native traditions and customs. In accordance with Tribal matriarchal custom, she was a member of the Beaver Clan of the Tribe. She was a 1964 graduate of Livingston High School and gained over two years of higher education during her travels all over the world. She also lived in Houston, Chicago, Lake Worth, Fla., and other cities in the United States for many years.

In Wayne Small, Linda met the love of her life, and they were married for forty-nine (49) years, as they traveled the world. They lived in Asia and Europe, as Wayne followed his profession. Together, they lived in and visited well over sixty (60) countries.

Of all of her experiences, and exposure to different cultures over the years, two events stood out: while living in Asia, she learned to navigate the Japanese transportation system, as she went shopping in Tokyo, and she learned to speak Japanese. While they lived in France, because of her love of cooking, she took a cooking course taught by a chef in Champagne, where she was forbidden to speak English. She learned to speak French.

Of her many life experiences, she remained true to her roots, as she organized and devoted many hours to her favorite church and charities as a volunteer. She started the Cha-ya-le-ha Walking Club to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association, became a Key Club member of the Woodlands Church, and was a volunteer social worker at the CHI Memorial Hospital in Livingston.

Throughout, she never forgot where she came from. She spoke her native language, and the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation was home, always. She has returned home.

She leaves behind her husband Wayne Small, son Bryan Small (Zett), and Alexander Small and Brennan Small, grandsons. Other survivors include brother Arnold Battise (Jo Ann), sister Grace Poncho (Sidney), Ben Thompson, brother-in-law, and Myra Battise, sister-in-law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents Woodrow and Eleanor Battise, sisters Betty Thompson and Noralee Langley, brother Brooks Battise, niece Irene Williams, and nephews Gary Battise, Barry Langley, and Scott Thompson.

Pallbearers are Russell Battise, Jason Thompson, Melanie Battise, David Battise, Danny Battise, and Colin Poncho.

Visitation was held at the Indian Village Assembly of God Church, on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at 5:30 P.M.

Services were held on Thursday, November 5, 2015, at the Assembly of God Church, officiated by the Rev. David Busby and the Rev. Rudy Martinez.

Burial will be at the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation cemetery.
