Obituary

Funeral services for Loraine Anita Autry, 95, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Sunday, August 2, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas with Rev. Harold Isaacs officiating. Interment will follow in the Menard Chapel Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 1, 2020, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home.

Mrs. Autry was born December 18, 1924 in Houston, Texas, to parents, Irving Kemp Sheffield and Anita (Etie) Sheffield, and passed away July 26, 2020 in Livingston, Texas. She graduated from Reagan High School in 1942 and attended Rice University. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Walt Autry Jr.; and brother, Irving Kemp Sheffield Jr.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Regina Autry; daughter, Diane Stephens; grandchildren, Christina Segrest, Diana Emens, Tracey Whiston, Susan Bradley, and Brandon Stokes; along with 8 great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

During her lifetime, Loraine had many accomplishments - the Pine Cone Festival for 17 years and received the Tom Simon Award in 1987 and the Special Award in 1989; hospital volunteer for 25 years; Beta Sigma Phi (World-wide service sorority) for 14 + years with Pledge of the Year, 6 times Woman of the Year, and Sweetheart; Charter member of Keep Polk County Beautiful; 10 years and Charter member of Polk County Crime Stoppers; Friends of the Library where she served 2 years as Publicity Chairman and Christmas Decoration Chairman, and also chaired the Open House at the library twice; lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #8568; nominated 4 times for Polk Countian of the Year and received the Law Enforcement Award.

Through the years, she had been available when called upon to help individuals and community. Some of the ways she helped - transported cancer patients to and from M.D. Anderson, helped mothers under the supervision of the Child Welfare Department, a judge at the DAR Good Citizen Contest, started Adopt-A-Highway in Polk County, promoted recycling in the area-given program to service clubs, attended and supported most local functions, and much, much more.

She and her husband, Walt, were honored with the Hometown Spirit award given by First State Bank in 1992. She was a member of Boots and Babes Square Dance Club and is still a member of the Houston Area Camping Squares where she served as secretary for 2 years, vice president for 3 years, and president for 3 years. She also was a member of the Texas State Camping Squares where she was the Social Director for 12 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Livingston VFW Post #8568.
