Obituary

Marilyn Sue Morgan was born in Baytown, Texas on November 4, 1953, the fourth of five children born to Robert L. and Doris Ruth Barnett Morgan. She passed into the life eternal in the early morning hours of March 2, 2024 in Bay City, Texas at the age of 70.

Marilyn was a 1972 graduate of Baytown's Ross S. Sterling High School, where she first dipped her toe into journalism, working for the school newspaper, and, more importantly, where she first met her future husband, John. After graduating from the University of Houston in 1975 with a degree in Communications, Marilyn landed a news anchor position at KOLE Radio. In 1978, she married Bruce Elliott and moved to Palacios, Texas where she raised her children, Alicia and Jack. During her time in Palacios, Marilyn taught English and Communications at Palacios Junior High and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios.

On July 15, 1991, Marilyn married the love of her life, John Morgan, and they resided in Newark Delaware for the next 18 years. There, Marilyn earned her master's degree from Wilmington College and became a National Board Certified teacher. During her career as an educator, she wrote articles for various publications, presented writing workshops, and helped establish state benchmark writing criteria. She also became immersed in service at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher and choir member.

In 2009, Marilyn and John retired to Waller, Texas, and Marilyn took on her fondest role—that of doting grandmother to Eli, Ivy, Fae, Barrett and Colt. She spent the remaining years of her life cultivating her love of family, gardening in the Texas heat, and deepening her understanding of God and faith through devotional study and writing.

Marilyn loved nothing so much as her God and her family, and she deeply cherished the abiding friendship of her close circle of life-long girlfriends. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and in turn, they absolutely adored their "Mimi." She will be remembered for her huge heart, for the empathy and compassion she showed all those she encountered, and for her steadfast love of God and faith in Jesus Christ.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, R.L. and Ruth Morgan, and her eldest brother, Hardy Gayle Morgan. She is survived by her husband, John Frederick Morgan of Waller, Texas, her children, Alicia Huddleston and husband, Jess, and Jack Elliott and wife, Brandi, and her grandchildren, Eli, Ivy and Fae Huddleston and Barrett and Colt Elliott. She is also survived by her sisters, Gloria Sextro and Dayle Burnside and husband, Tommy, and her brother, Luke Morgan and wife, Mary, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am, and Pastor Kenneth Burkhard officiating. Directly following the service, Marilyn will be laid to rest among her ancestors at the Carlisle Community Cemetery in Trinity County, Texas.
