Funeral services for Marlene Hinson Handley of Livingston will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the First United Methodist Church of Livingston. Burial will be at Jones Prairie Cemetery in Leggett at 1138 FM 942 East.
Marlene was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She died at the home of her sister in Livingston, Monday, July 5, after a valiant battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Livingston to Verna and Ernest Hinson Jr. and spent all of her youth in Leggett, graduating from Leggett High School in 1955.
She was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church in Leggett and just recently moved her membership to the First United Methodist Church in Livingston.
While attending the University of Houston, Marlene married George Rankin Handley, her childhood sweetheart. They raised their two children, George Harold and Lana Denise in the Pearland area. After the death of her husband in 1981, she moved to the Houston area and later to Kingwood where she devoted her life to raising two of her beloved grandchildren, Theresa and Kevin Killen.
Marlene worked for most of her adult life at Exxon Company, USA and after 30 years and many friendships retired in 1994. Marlene then began a new career and worked for Kingwood United Methodist Church in their School for Little Children for the last 12 years.
This new career was truly her calling and she loved her ""kids"" and all of the special women who worked with her. She has touched the lives of countless children through this avenue and through her nursery work at the Kingwood First Baptist Church, as well as her work with many of the school organizations in which her grandchildren were involved.
She was an avid sports fan, in particular, A&M football-her son' alma mater. She loved family reunions, her grandchildren and great-grandson, family, and friends and her home.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, George Harold and Terry Handley; daughter and son-in-law, Lana Denise and Steve Killen; grandchildren, Brian and Kim Handley, Andrew Handley, Theresa Killen, and Kevin Killen; great-grandson Ethan Handley; special sister and brother-in-law Verna and Eugene Parrish; special brother and sister-in-law Melvin and Betty Jones; and numerous cousins and many friends.
Visitation will be at Cochran' Funeral Home on Friday, July 9, from 6 to 8 p.m., with family visitation from 5 to 6 p.m.
