Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth (Sylestine) Alec, 55, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Saturday, December 28, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. in the Indian Village Presbyterian Church in Livingston, Texas with Pastor Debra Battise Kleinman officiating. Interment will follow in the Alabaman-Coushatta Indian Reservation Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be held Friday, December 27, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas with a wake service at 6:00 p.m.
Mary Elizabeth was born on December 12, 1958 in Woodville, Texas to parents, Herman D. Battise and Moree (Sylestine) Poncho, and passed away on December 24, 2013 in Conroe, Texas. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Harry and Doris Sylestine. She graduated in 1978 from Livingston High School. She was a former Girl Scout of the Indian Reservation, former Powwow Princess (1973), member of the Indian Presbyterian Church, auxiliary member of the Alabama-Coushatta Powwow Association and former member of the Alabama-Coushatta Traveling Dance Troupe and a charter member of the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Club. She also participated in summer softball league at the reservation. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, grandparents, two brothers: Randall Lee Battise and Tracy Edward Battise; her uncles: Terry Sylestine and Alton L. Sylestine; and her aunts: Imogene Sylestine, Sandra Battise, and Denise Sylestine.
She is survived by her sons: Tobine Alec, and Logan and Destiny Alec; daughter: Portia Cheyenne Alec; grandchildren: Lilly-Ann Elizabeth Alec, and Trace Michael Alec; brother: Bradley Battise; sisters: Phyllis (Battise) Richard, and Janice Battise; step-mother: Naomi Battise and her children, Toddie Battise, Derek Battise, Tanya Battise, and Deanna and Ross Abbey; the father of her children: Obrey Alec; her in-laws: Lyndon and Rebecca Alec, Cecil Jr. and Charlene Alec, Paula Alec, and Frederick and Donna Alec; maternal uncle: Thomas Sylestine and Jennifer Taylor; maternal aunts: Joann and Arnold Battise, Carol and Donnis Battise; great aunt: Isabelle Celestine; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Mary Elizabeth will be escorted to her grave by pallbearers, Chad Alec, Kinney Alec, Micah Robinson, Jonathan Richard, Gregory Battise, and Armand Polite. Honorary pallbearers are Manning Robinson, Samuel Richard, Bryce Battise, Liam Battise, andTrace Alec.
