Funeral services for Mickey Dale Gilbert, 63, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Thursday, December 4, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in the St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Livingston, Texas with Father Link Hullar officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the St. Luke's Episcopal Church Parrish Hall in Livingston, Texas.
Mr. Gilbert of Livingston passed away on December 1, 2014 at the age of 63. Mickey is survived by his wife of 41 years, Sandra; daughter, Amanda of League City, Texas; daughter, Sarah Ege and son-in-law Michael of Little Elm, Texas. Mickey is also survived by his mother, Willie Rutherford; brother, Ronnie and sisters, Sharlene, Daina and Linda. Mickey was preceded in death by his father, Clyde; adoptive father, Henry; adoptive mother, Ora; brother, Allan; sister, Audrey; sister, Pat and grandmother, Vallie Mae. Mickey was a 27 year member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Livingston where he served several terms as Senior Warden and taught Sunday school for many years. His lessons based on the television show, Andy Griffith, were enjoyed by all. Mickey was a long time educator. His coaching and teaching career included jobs at Hearne, Alvin, Livingston and Trinity. Mickey was also high school assistant principal, principal and elementary principal in Groveton, Texas. Most recently, Mickey worked as a teacher at Livingston High School in the Challenger Program. Mickey cared for each of his students and athletes and had a continued friendship with many of them years after they graduated. Mickey graduated from Sudan High School in 1969, attended Ranger Jr. College where he played football. He also attended South Plains College and graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University in 1975. He received his Master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
Mikey was known by all to be a kind, generous, funny man with a knack for storytelling. He loved to watch football and cheered for anyone who played the Dallas Cowboys and Texas A&M. Mickey was active many years with the Sea Lions Swim Team and served as starter for several seasons. The Empty Stocking Program was a special project of Mickey's. Mickey was an avid woodworker and he had a special interest in making beautiful pens. He also loved to fish. He was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Livingston Green and White Scholarship Fund or to the Groveton Faculty Scholarship Fund.
