Obituary

Graveside services for Norma Gene Coats Slater, 92, of Livingston, Texas will be held on Sunday, September 19 th , 2021, at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Norma passed away on what would have been her beloved husband, Troy's 93 rd birthday.  After 50 years apart, they are together again.

Mrs. Slater was born in Livingston, Texas on November 14, 1928, to parents Norman A. Coats and Ola Grace Garvey Coats and passed away peacefully on September 7, 2021.  She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Troy R. Slater, sister, Carolyn Coats, brother, Jerry Coats and beloved niece, Samantha.

After graduation from Livingston High School, Norma attended the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. Afterward, she received a teacher's certificate where she taught English Literature in Shepherd, Texas before her marriage to Troy.

Norma retired from the Texas Department of Human Services at age 65. She was a Child Protective worker for 9 years.  After retirement, Norma took up painting and became quite accomplished with it.  She loved working with the Livingston Art League.  Her love of reading led her to spend many hours as a volunteer for the Livingston Municipal Library. She was also a member of the Daughters of Republic of Texas.  Norma was a proud and loving mother and grandmother.

Norma is survived by her son, Troy R. (Sonny) Slater, Jr, and wife, Sue of Mesquite, Texas; son, Gary Slater and wife, Datha of Livingston, Texas; daughter, Jo Lynn Miller and husband, Larry of Livingston, Texas; sister, Paula Hoerr of Leesville, Louisiana: Grandchildren; Stephanie Slater, Angelica Graddick, Travis Slater, Cliff Slater, Sady Slater Lewis, and Chelsea Churchman, Luke Tanner, Kyle Farris, and Michael Sylvester.  Great-grandchildren; Joshua, Gavin, Alyssa, Abby, Ashlynn, Troy Hardin, Ben, Titus, Brandon and Jacey.  Great-great grandsons, Dallas, Jaxon, and Reese. She is also survived by dear friends, Faye Wilson, Marilyn Elliot Kidd and Glenda and Pat.

Norma enjoyed traveling around the country with her best friend, Faye.  They had memorable trips to California and the Grand Canyon.

Norma will forever be remembered for her lovely smile, laugh and the most beautiful eyes.  She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a gracious lady always willing to help others, especially her family.  She will be dearly missed.

The family would like to thank the owners and staff at The Gardens for their loving care of our mother.  Also, thanks to the staff of Pine Ridge Health Care and Harbor Hospice.  A special thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Luna for his patience and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donating in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the Livingston Public Library.
