Private services for Peggy Sue Haley, 83, of Livingston, will be held on Monday October 19, 2009 at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
This respected and long time resident of Livingston, Texas passed away peacefully on Friday, the sixteenth of October, 2009 from the affects of Alzheimer' disease.
Born June 11, 1926 in Houston, Texas, Peggy was the daughter of the late Pearl Robinson and The Honorable Royal H.C. Shepherd of Hitchcock and later of Livingston. She is also preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Harold Haley, mother-in-law Edith Bennett and her sisters, Wanda Heckendorm and Evelyn Nebout.
Peggy attended Houston schools, graduating from San Jacinto High School. She was a church secretary and dedicated member of Second Baptist Church on McGowan Street. She married Harold on April 23, 1946, and they resided in Houston until 1957, then moved to Livingston to achieve Harold' dream of starting a radio station and later, a low power television station.
In addition to announcing the early morning local news for Livingston and Corrigan, Peggy managed all business and public relations of the radio station, seven days a week. She and Harold broadcast every high school football game, and other sports, for decades; she was the lifeline of KETX. Peggy enjoyed the Pilot Club and Rotary Anns when time permitted. Central Baptist Church was her church home in Livingston, where she served the Lord for nearly forty years in the capacity she loved the most, teaching and directing the nursery and toddlers. Even when Alzheimer' disease changed her life' course, this devoted lady resisted even when it was deemed necessary for her to leave her positions at the church and radio station.
Despite Peggy' exhausting schedule, her family' happiness was paramount, a consistent goal was the happiness of others. She will be most lovingly remembered for that devotion to her family, for the love she had of children, her positive attitude, generosity and her remarkable principles, always living by, and reminding her children of the Golden Rule. Her word was also golden. Peggy sought right from wrong, exemplifying a woman of great moral integrity. She never lacked an appreciation of nature, nor failed to give the proper credit by saying, ""Thank you God.""
Among those who survive to live with the memory of her exceptional spirit is her daughter, Peggy ""Bitsy"" Marsh and husband, Jim of Sugar Land, her son Harold ""Bubba"" Haley of Livingston, brother Royal Shepherd of Azle and sisters-in-law, Billie Shepherd of Azle, and Gloria Van Slyke of Portland, Oregon. Three grandchildren, Emily Lankford and her husband, Brad of Missouri City, Hannah Haley Thomas, her husband Stacey and Hunter Haley of Livingston, also survive their ""Nana"". Peggy is also leaving her five great grandchildren, newest addition, Ty Thomas, Haley, Braden, Addi and Ella Lankford, who have been blessed to spend very special time with her. Peggy also loved her surviving nieces and nephews, Linda Meenan, Rodney Heckendorn, Sheran DeBlieux, Darla Hillman, Debbie McLawchlin, Allen Shepherd, Joe Shepherd, Bruce Heckendorn, Sandy Alhson, Kathy Lewis and Steve Lewis.
It must be mentioned that Peggy truly loved her many loyal and caring listeners. She would have been very grateful for the demonstration of love and concern that was shown during her absence from the radio station and her local news in the mornings.
The family expresses their sincere love and gratitude to the compassionate nurses and staff of Silverado Senior Living in Kingwood, especially to caregivers, Tina, Alisa and Annette; and to the administrative staff and caregivers at Silverado Senior Living in Sugar Land, and special caregivers Vina, Mercy and Barbara. The comfort and care provided by the wonderful staff of Silverado Hospice is also greatly appreciated. And most recently, we are grateful to Hospice Compassus staff members, Christina, Bobby and Meyer who demonstrated remarkable respect and preserved the same dignity that she had maintained throughout her lifetime.
Grandson-in-law, Brad Lankford, will officiate the private service a the Houston National Cemetery Chapel. She will then join her husband, Hal, who was laid to rest there in 2007.
Serving as pallbearers are Hunter Haley, Stacey Thomas, Joe Shepherd, Allen Shepherd and Royal Shepherd.
