Graveside services for Ravenel Leola (Murphy) Lawless, 96, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Holhausen-Darby Cemetery in Moscow, Texas with Bro. Flynn Hendrix officiating.

Mrs. Lawless passed away Monday, January 25, 2016 at Pine Ridge Nursing Home in Livingston, Texas. She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mertie Murphy; husband, Julius Lawless; sister, Allene Martin; and infant sister, Treva Murphy.

Ravenel was born in a log cabin in Polk County, Texas, on May 2, 1919 to parents, Charles Louis Murphy and Mertie (Wilson) Murphy. Ravenel lived in the Big Sandy community for the last 56 years. She was a charter member, secretary, and Sunday School teacher for the Big Sandy Baptist Church. Since 1964, she was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Livingston.


When Ravenel was two years old, her family moved to The Heights in Houston. At the age of six, she attended Thomas Jefferson Grammar School and later Alexander Hamilton Jr. High. When Ravenel was in the ninth grade, the family moved back to Polk County where she attended high school in Livingston. After a year, the family moved back to Houston and Ravenel, a charter member of the Honor Society, graduated from John H. Reagan High School in 1936.

After graduating, Ravenel attended classes in mechanical drawing, design and drafting at A&M Engineering School in Houston. This led to a job as a draftsman at Pure Oil in the Esperson Building in downtown Houston. She then applied for and got a job at Harrison Oil in the Gulf Building as the only woman draftsman.

In 1946, Ravenel met the love of her life, Julius Lawless, a corporal in the National Guard who was employed at Reed Roller Bit in Houston. They married in June and a year later daughter, Melanie, was born. Son, Charles, was born four years later.

She is survived by her daughter, Melanie Stein and husband, Kenneth of Bellville, Texas; son, Charles Lawless and wife, Cheryl of Big Sandy, Texas; grandchildren, Stephanie Kasper and husband, Kurtis of Houston, Texas, Elissa Lenox and husband, Jeff of Big Sandy, Texas, Carey Tyler and husband, Brian of Holland, Texas, Catherine Patschke and husband, Adam of Big Sandy, Texas, and Cameron Stein of Bellville, Texas; great-grandchildren, Caleb Ratcliff, Conor Ratcliff, Caylee Ratcliff, Caitlyn Tyler, Briley Tyler, Bailey Lenox, Wyatt Lenos, Kai Kasper, and Katherine Kasper; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Ravenel will be remembered as a talented, loving and loyal mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
