Obituary

Funeral services for Raymond Hovinga, age 86, of Livingston will be held Thursday November 19, 2009 at 10:00am at the Schwab City Baptist Church with Bro. David Jones officiating and interment to follow in the Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Pallbearers will be Dick Baxter, Curt Ross, Harry Bussie, Leon Culbertson, Bob Shafer and James Wagers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Baughman, Ed Clevenger, Preacher Simpson, Scott Whittemore, James Olinzock, Roy Rowell and Randy Randolph. Military Honors provided by District 4 Honor Guard.

He was born July 26, 1923 in Byron Township, Michigan the son of Albert Hovinga and Susie DeVries Hovinga and passed away November 15, 2009 at his home in Livingston. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughters, Jolene Smith and Carol Hovinga, brothers, Simon Hovinga & Herman Hovinga and sister, Jennie Grover.

Raymond served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Frogman and was a Pearl Harbor survivor and a life member of the VFW Post #8568. He was a member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers Local #340 of Battle Creek, Michigan and he worked on numerous bridges including the Mackinaw Bridge and was a member of the Schwab City Baptist Church in Livingston.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Joan Hovinga of Livingston, James R. Smith, son of Florida, Theresa & Dale Errett, step daughter and husband of Pennsylvania, Deborah Badder, step daughter of Texas, Linda & Harold Oder, step daughter & husband of Texas, Bob & Pam Eisen, step son & wife of Michigan, George & Pam Eisen, step son & wife of Michigan, Charles Ray Eisen, step son of Michigan, Frederick & Arlene Eison, step son & wife of Michigan, Elsie & John Van Dyke, sister & brother in law of North Carolina, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, Betty Weisenberger, sister in law of Michigan and Louise Olinzock, sister in law of California.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Escapees Care Inc. or Lighthouse Hospice.
