Peace I leave you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. - John 14:27
Robert Andrew "Andy" Jackson M.D. passed away peacefully on December 3rd at home surrounded by his children leaving a void that will never be filled. The world lost a great man when he slipped away.
Andy was born on October 12, 1934 in Industry, TX (Austin Co.) to proud parents Robert Wilburn Jackson and Tillie Zanek Jackson. Education and a strong work ethic were instilled in him early on and he was always proud of his Czech heritage.
His father, a business owner and school superintendent moved the family to Galveston, TX in 1944. It was here after spending time in the hospital that he discovered a passion for the field of medicine and knew that he wanted to become a doctor. He graduated in 1951 from Ball High School and every summer rode his bicycle miles down the Seawall to work on the Island roller coaster to start saving. At age16 he entered The Rice Institute and later met the love of his life and soulmate, Wanda Ragland. He graduated from Rice in 1955 and Andy attended the University of Texas Medical Branch (class of 1959) followed by an Internship and Residency at Hermann Hospital 1959-1965; Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. 1962-1963. Dr. J's amazing medical practice in Internal Medicine spanned over 35 years beginning at Medical Arts 1965-1975 (downtown Houston); Ledbetter Clinic/Twelve Oaks Hospital: 1975-2000; Chief of Staff at the Medical Arts Bldg. 1972 and Twelve Oaks 1978.
Memberships: AMA, TMA, Harris County Medical Society, Houston Society of Internal Medicine. Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Area Council: Board of Directors 1980-2008, Chairman of Health and Safety Committee, Scout Master, Silver Beaver/Highest Award in Leadership; Family of the Year. Member of South Main Baptist Church: Deacon since 1985, Youth Sunday School instructor, Youth Camp for 15 yrs., Bible Study Fellowship 1987-1993. Andy was such an outstanding physician, leader mentor, father figure and caretaker to so many. His calling in life was practicing medicine and he was respected and admired by so many of his fellow physicians, patients and medical staff.
Andy's love in life was his devotion to his four children: Nancy, Judy, Amy and Clay.
There was never a dull moment in the 30 years they lived in Southampton. It was Grand Central Station on Rice Blvd. where the door was always open, the driveway was always full and aroma from the kitchen lingered. Andy and Wanda's generosity and unconditional love was endless, hosting foreign exchange students from all over the world, Steak Nights, Movie Nights and many memorable vacations and weekends at the family farm.
His presence made this world a better place and he will be in our hearts forever.
