Funeral services for Robert Eugene Hermes, 84, of Livingston, Texas will be held Friday, August 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas with Bro. Gerald Morris and Bro. Randy Wagstaff officiating. Interment will follow at Peebles Cemetery in Livingston, Texas. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Robert Eugene Hermes, affectionately known by many names—R.E., Daddy, Grandpa, Uncle, Mr. Bobby, Bro Hermes, and Pop—was a one-of-a-kind man whose 84 years were filled with family, faith, hard work, laughter, music, and countless stories.

Born on Monday, September 1, 1941, on Labor Day, on the courthouse square in Huntsville, Texas, Robert was born Bobby Gene Hyde at a doctor’s clinic over Ray’s Drug Store.

After his mother remarried, he was adopted by her husband, Hank Hermes, and became Robert Eugene Hermes. From that moment forward, he would leave a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Robert was truly one of a kind—a limited edition, guaranteed authentic, a true classic, aged to perfection, with all original parts… mostly. He was a man of many facets, much like the colorful M&M candies he enjoyed. Each color represented another part of his remarkable personality.

Pop was methodical and disciplined, technologically savvy, and a voracious reader. He was an East Texas “42” champion and named Duke in 7th grade in 1952. He was a deep thinker, a top-notch salesman, and an extraordinary poker player who could turn play money into millions many times over.

He loved music, especially traditional hymns and country music, and had a particular appreciation for Jimmie Rodgers. He was a fireworks entrepreneur, a rabid fan of Antiques Roadshow, and a man who could tell a story for every occasion—usually with a joke or two included.

He loved old movies, actors and actresses, and knew songs and their artists. He was a wordsmith, a talker, a people person, a charmer, and occasionally, delightfully outrageous. He could command attention, make people laugh, and leave behind a story that would be remembered long after the conversation ended.

But perhaps the greatest description of Robert was this: he was a man of great compassion.

His life was shaped not only by his many talents and interests, but also by his love for his family, his love for his Loving Saint Theresa, and, above all, the grace of God. These were the things that transformed what began as a lump of coal into a diamond.

Psalm 90:10 reminds us that the days of our years are limited. Robert’s 84 years were a gift—a life filled with memories, relationships, laughter, wisdom, faith, and love.

Robert Eugene Hermes leaves behind a legacy that cannot be measured simply by years. His legacy lives on in the people he loved, the stories he told, the lessons he taught, and the memories he created.

He was one of a kind.

He was a true classic.

He was Pop.

And he will be deeply missed.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Lila Jo and Deavours Musgrove; wife, Theresa Hermes; and sister, Alice Goff.

He is survived by his son, Jimmy Hermes and wife Veronica; grandchildren, Michiel Combs and wife Alyssa, Curtis Hermes and wife Jeni, Cole Hermes and wife Lily, Caitlyn Clamon and husband Matthew, Amber Quinn and husband Wesley, Garrett Spears and wife Amber, and Kristen Legg and husband Justin; great grandchildren, Noah, Annabelle, Jude, Liam, Evalynne, Olivia, Grayson, Graci, Gentri, Gage, and Gavin; very special lifetime best friend, Ynette Boyce; special family member, Angie Hermes; and Cindy and Gary Porter; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers: Curtis Hermes, Michiel Combs, Cole Hermes, Matthew Clamon, Gage Clamon, Grayson Hermes, Noah Combs, and Pete Cowen.
