Obituary

Memorial services for Robert Calvin Serpas, 83, formerly of Livingston, Texas will be held Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Livingston, Texas with Rev. Harold Isaacs officiating.

Mr. Serpas was born October 4, 1935 in New Orleans, Louisiana to parents, Robert Sidney Serpas and Minnie (Smith) Serpas, and passed August 6, 2019 at home in Foley, Alabama. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joanna Batons; brothers, Fred Serpas and Novel Serpas; and son-in-law, Andy Peters. In 1953, Calvin married Mavis Moony and they had three children, Robert, Raymond, and Becky. After their divorce, he later married Norma Owens. Along with Norma's son, Russell, they had a daughter, Jacqueline together.

During his life, Calvin was a manager for Brookshire Brothers from the late 1950's until his retirement in 1973. He was also very successful in business and had a very strong work ethic. Working over 100 hours a week was nothing out of the ordinary for him. After the economy slowed down, Calvin sold his businesses and began selling cars. Soon after, he became the #2 Car Salesman in the United States for General Motors for several years in a row. Most people will remember him as a firefighter with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department serving from May of 1963 to November of 1973. During this time, he served 7 years as a captain, 3 years as a lieutenant, served as an Assistant Fire Marshall and he was honored as Fireman of the Year. He was an 8-year member of the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department Pumper Team. The team acquired great success across the state of Texas. There were many first-place finishes including the Gulf Coast Fireman's Association, East Texas Fireman's Association, Tri-Rivers Fireman's Association, plus many open meets. The department also participated in the World's HemisFair in 1968. His Pumper Team's highlights came in 1967, 1969, and 1970 when they placed first at the State Convention.

Calvin was an incredible leader in every aspect of his life and was admired by many for his ability to enjoy life. He really liked making the best out of every moment. He lived his best life - coming from nothing make making something out of himself. He left a legacy for all of his family and friends to follow.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Serpas; daughters, Jackie Serpas Strickland and Becky Serpas Peters; sons, Robert Serpas and wife, Sherry, Raymond Serpas, and Russell Stephens; grandchildren, Solomon Strickland, Lincoln Strickland, Houston Serpas and wife, Sarah, Tyler Serpas and wife, Shelby, Scott Peters and wife, Rebecca, Shelby Nicole Prince and husband, Joshua, Darin Peters and wife, Christina, Diana Dean and husband, Thomas, Becky Tinsley and husband, Dale, and Betsy Rawlinson and husband, Chris; along with numerous great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
