Ruth Clamon Courtney, 90, of Livingston, Texas, passed away on December 3, 2015. She was born on September 4, 1925 in Hortense, Texas, the ninth of eleven children by William E. (Bill) and Clea Clamon. Ruth married Dawson Emmitt Courtney on May 30, 1946 and they were married for 67 years before his passing on February 18, 2014.

Ruth's early years were spent on the family farm in Hortense, Texas. Her early education included Hortense, Corrigan and Chester schools. She attended Stephen F. Austin State University before starting her career as an athletic coach and teacher. She could shoot a set shot and played softball, volleyball, speedball and field hockey. At SFA, she was an all-star in basketball and speedball. She taught first at Chester High School and then physical education at Livingston High School. She and Dawson settled in Houston, Texas where Ruth became a homemaker and mother. Her child-rearing years were spent providing for her children and their school activities, sports teams, and many assorted interests, making sure that her family was on time to every function, especially church. Ruth enjoyed gardening and was a longtime member of the Bellewood Garden Club. She participated in church league sports and regularly gathered with friends for dinner and to play 42. When her children were older she continued teaching as a substitute in the public schools and as a kindergarten teacher at Long Point Baptist School in Houston.

After she and Dawson retired to Livingston, Texas in 1995 they became members of Central Baptist Church and attended the Loyalty class.
