Obituary

A memorial service will be held for Thomas Slater King on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. in the Central Baptist Church in Livingston, Texas with Bill Skaar officiating.

Graveside services for Thomas Slater King, 95, of Livingston, Texas, will be held Friday, February 12, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Livingston, Texas.

Thomas Slater King crossed over the Jordan River into his heavenly home February 7, 2021. Born December 4, 1925 to Thomas Smith King and Carrie Lee Slater King in Hillsboro, Texas. He attended Hillsboro Public Schools and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1942. He attended Baylor University and received a BBA degree in 1948 and served a term as a director of the Baylor Alumni Association. He proudly served his country from 1944-1946 in the US Navy as a Signalman 3 rd Class. He served in California, and with GroPac 13 in Hawaii and China. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bettye Stripling King; infant son, Curtiss King; son, Thomas Slater King Jr.; brothers, James Allen King and Harvey Bills King; sister, Charlotte King; step-daughter, Barbara Atkinson; sisters-in-law, Margaret Stripling Oliver, Dr. Joyce Stripling Davis, Celia Stripling Young; and brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Young. He is survived by his wife, Laverne Caffrey King; sons, David King and wife, Rebecca, Joseph King and wife, Ann; daughters, Camille King Carter, Carol King Hoch, Suzanne King; step-son-in-law, Martin Atkinson; sister-in-law, Bobbie King; and brothers-in-law, Dr. Phil Davis and Rev. Bruce Oliver. He is survived by 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and friends.

Tom started his business career in 1948 in Dallas, Texas with Oak Cliff Savings and Loan Association. In 1953 Tom moved to Houston and Southwestern Savings Association which later became United Savings Association where he served as a Director, Executive Vice President, and President until retirement in 1982. Tom served the S&L business as President of the Harris County S&L League, Chairman of the Texas S&L League and a Director of the National S&L League. Tom attended the first International S&L School in Oxford, England in 1963 and had a special assignment for the US AID mission of the State Department to Nicaragua in 1965. He served as a Director of the Nassau Bay National Bank, as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, as a member of the Government affairs Committee of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, as President of the Harris County Easter Seals and Cripple Children Association, as Clothing Chairman of the Houston Chapter, American Red Cross during Hurricane Carla, as President of the Downtown Optimist Club and Director of Boys Harbor, La Porte, Texas and as a member of the Houston Mortgage Bankers Association.

As a second career, Tom served as President, CEO of the Texas S&L League, Austin, Texas from 1984 until 1992 during the Texas real estate and financial institution downturn. He represented the S&L business with honor and distinction in Austin and Washington, D.C. before the legislature, congress and regulatory bodies. Tom published a book, "The Great Texas Savings and Loan Financial Debacle," in May 2005 about those troubled times.

Tom was a member of Cliff Temple Baptist Church, Dallas, South Main Baptist Church, Houston, Hyde Park Baptist Church, Austin, Central Baptist Church, Livingston, and Tallowood Baptist Church, Houston. He has served his church as a Deacon and served his denomination as Trustee, Union Baptist Foundation, Trustee, Memorial Baptist Hospital System, Trustee, Trinity Pines Baptist Conference Center, as a member of the Executive Board and the Human Welfare Commission and Debt Review Committee of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and as a Director of Disciple All Nations, Inc.

Honorary attendants will be the Deacons and Joy Class of Central Baptist Church; special friends, Jim Parrott and Dr. Phil Davis; and former Pastors, Russell Dilday, Bill Skaar, and Dan Crawford.
