Obituary

Vertis Gene Tomek passed away peacefully at his home in Onalaska, Texas on Friday, February 18, 2022 after a long illness at the age of 75.  Vertis was born on July 6, 1946 in Houston, Texas to John & Frances Tomek.  Vertis lost his father when he was just 12 years old, and quickly became the man of the house, helping to take care of his mother & younger sister, Janis Kay.  He graduated Waltrip High School in 1966.  After graduation, Vertis voluntarily enlisted in the US Army, as many of his friends were drafted.  He served in Vietnam as a field medic from Feb 1970 to Apr 1971, reaching the rank of SP4.  He was very proud of his service.  After he returned home, he began working for General Electric and retired after 30+ years.   Vertis enjoyed attending church at Lake Livingston Lutheran where he was a member, his membership at the local VFW Post 8568, hunting, fishing, playing bingo & the slots at the casinos with family & friends.

Vertis was preceded in death by his father John in 1958, and mother, Frances in 2009 and  is survived by his sister Janis Kay Campbell and her husband Steve of Cove, Texas, his nephew Paul Barrickman & his wife Mary of Houston, Texas,  and many cousins & friends including, Jim & Linda Hildebrand of Highlands, Texas, Debbie & Howard Mitschke of Houston Texas, Donald Tomek of Houston, Texas, Charlene Harrington of Cove, Texas, Louis DelHomme of Houston, Texas, Cecil E. & Ginger Sick of Houston, Texas, Randy & Tammy Sick of Tomball, Texas, Kent Sick of Austin, Texas, Matt & Velinda Baker of Onalaska, Texas, Jim Baker of Dayton, Texas and Denise Owen & family of Tacoma, Washington.

Vertis was so loved by many and we will all miss him, but we are comforted knowing he is now in Heaven with The Lord and loved ones, no longer suffering, and that we will see him again in joyous reunion.

Services are being coordinated by the Cochran Funeral Home in Livingston, Texas, and will be held at Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas where his ashes will be interred on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 9:15 a.m.
